Varun Chakravarthy Recounts Traumatic Backlash Following IPL 2021 COVID-19 Diagnosis
Indian cricket spinner Varun Chakravarthy has bravely shared a distressing episode from his professional journey, shedding light on the vicious online harassment and public condemnation he endured after contracting COVID-19 during the 2021 Indian Premier League season. In a candid interview on the YouTube program Journey to Jersey, Chakravarthy disclosed the emotional scars left by fans who blamed him for the abrupt halt of the tournament.
The Incident That Shook the IPL
Chakravarthy was among the initial players to test positive for the coronavirus ahead of a scheduled match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The fixture was promptly postponed, but the situation rapidly deteriorated as COVID-19 cases infiltrated team bio-bubbles. This escalation compelled the Board of Control for Cricket in India to suspend the IPL midway through the season after only 29 matches had been completed. Alongside Chakravarthy, fellow KKR fast bowler Sandeep Warrier also returned a positive test within the squad.
Reflecting on that tumultuous period, Chakravarthy expressed the profound burden of being held accountable by supporters for the tournament's cancellation. "The worst was when IPL was stopped in 2021. It got stopped halfway because I got Covid. I was the first person to test positive. So the whole IPL had stopped," he recounted. Reports at the time indicated that the mystery spinner had left the bio-secure environment with official permission to receive treatment for a shoulder injury, where he likely encountered the virus.
A Wave of Online Abuse and Its Lasting Impact
What ensued was a torrent of digital vitriol that deeply affected Chakravarthy. "There were people abusing me. Back then, IPL was the only way people were passing time. They were so angry that it was stopped. People were saying, 'Why don't you just die.' It was that bad," he revealed. This barrage of hateful messages highlighted the intense pressure and unrealistic expectations placed on athletes, especially during a global pandemic when sports served as a primary source of entertainment for millions confined to their homes.
Resilience and Career Success Despite Adversity
Despite this harrowing experience, Chakravarthy has demonstrated remarkable fortitude, continuing to be a pivotal player for Kolkata Knight Riders. In the most recent IPL season, he finished as the seventh-highest wicket-taker, claiming 17 wickets at an average of 22.52 and an economy rate of 7.66, with his best performance being 3 for 22. Over 83 matches for the franchise, he has accumulated 99 wickets at an average of 23.74, including two four-wicket hauls and a career-best figure of 5 for 20.
Chakravarthy's talent was further showcased on the international stage at the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where he emerged as the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, securing 14 wickets. However, his economy rate of 9.25 indicated areas for refinement in high-pressure global tournaments.
This revelation underscores the often-overlooked mental health challenges faced by professional athletes, particularly when external factors beyond their control lead to public scrutiny and abuse. Chakravarthy's story serves as a poignant reminder of the human element in sports, where players navigate not only physical demands but also psychological hurdles.
