Wankhede Stadium to Immortalize Cricket Icons with Special Tributes
In a landmark decision, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has unveiled plans to pay homage to legendary cricketers by naming key sections of the iconic Wankhede Stadium after them. This move aims to celebrate the rich heritage of Mumbai and Indian cricket, ensuring that the contributions of these stalwarts are forever remembered by fans and future generations.
Ravi Shastri Honored with Stand Naming
The Apex Council of the MCA, during a meeting held in Mumbai, approved a proposal to name the Level 1 Stand located below the Press Box after former India captain and renowned commentator Ravi Shastri. This recognition is in acknowledgment of Shastri's outstanding contributions to both Mumbai and Indian cricket, spanning his roles as a player, leader, and coach. The stand will serve as a permanent tribute to his immense impact on the sport.
Gates Dedicated to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji
In addition to the stand, three different gates at Wankhede Stadium will be named after other cricketing greats from the city. Gate No. 3 will be dedicated to Dilip Sardesai, who represented India in 30 Test matches and played a total of 179 First-Class matches between 1960-61 and 1972-73. Gate No. 5 will honor Diana Edulji, a trailblazer in women's cricket who featured in 20 Tests and 34 ODIs from 1976 to 1993. Similarly, Gate No. 6 will be named after Eknath Solkar, a former all-rounder celebrated as one of the best close-in fielders, with 27 Tests and seven ODIs for India to his credit.
MCA's Commitment to Celebrating Cricketing Heritage
MCA President Ajinkya emphasized the importance of honoring these legends, stating that Mumbai cricket is built on the foundation laid by such stalwarts. He highlighted that it is the association's responsibility to recognize those who have brought pride to the city and the nation. The naming of the stand after Shastri and the gates after Sardesai, Solkar, and Edulji is designed to remind every fan entering the stadium of the legends who shaped India's glorious cricketing heritage.
