West Indies Cricket Team Safely Returns Home After Travel Disruption in India
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has officially confirmed that all members of the West Indies cricket team and their support staff have now safely returned to their respective homes. This announcement comes after a significant travel disruption left the squad stranded in India following their participation in the T20 World Cup.
Travel Plans Thrown Into Disarray by Regional Conflict
The ongoing conflict in West Asia, specifically involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, created severe travel complications. This situation led to the closure of airspace and major airports at key transit hubs, including Dubai. Consequently, both the West Indies and South African cricket teams found themselves unable to depart from Kolkata, India, where the West Indies had played their final T20 World Cup matches on March 1.
"The final group of players and support staff completed their journeys over the past several days and have now safely arrived at their respective destinations," stated Cricket West Indies in a formal release on Saturday.
Staggered Departures and Coordinated Efforts
While nine West Indies players managed to leave earlier in the week, the remaining sixteen were booked on commercial flights to facilitate their return. The International Cricket Council (ICC) had previously announced on Thursday that the last batch of players had departed.
CWI expressed its gratitude towards the ICC, various regional cricket boards, and other stakeholders for their assistance in coordinating the complex return logistics. "We also thank West Indies fans and the wider cricketing community for their concern and well-wishes," the statement added, emphasizing that "the well-being and safety of our players and staff remain paramount."
Frustration and Criticism Amidst the Chaos
The travel chaos was not without controversy. It sparked criticism from some players, with West Indies head coach Daren Sammy publicly expressing frustration over a lack of timely updates from the ICC. This followed the cancellation of a scheduled charter flight from Kolkata due to unforeseen logistical issues.
CWI concluded its statement by noting relief that "the matter has now been brought to a safe and satisfactory conclusion," marking the end of an unexpected and challenging post-tournament ordeal for the Caribbean cricketers.
