A woman and her five-year-old daughter were killed on the spot, and her brother-in-law sustained serious injuries when a speeding Thar struck their motorcycle and dragged it for nearly 100 metres in Varanasi's Bhullanpur area late Sunday night.
The incident occurred around 11:30 pm when Soni Rajbhar, 25, her daughter, and brother-in-law Manish were returning home on a motorcycle after attending a ring ceremony in Modhaila. As they passed through Bhullanpur, a Thar coming from behind rammed into their bike, killing Soni and her daughter instantly. The Thar dragged the motorcycle with Manish for about 100 metres before locals raised an alarm, prompting the driver to stop.
The driver, identified as Vivek, a resident of Tarva in Azamgarh, rushed the injured to a hospital, where Soni and her daughter were declared dead. Manish's condition is reported to be stable. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Varuna zone) Pramod Kumar confirmed that Vivek has been arrested and the vehicle seized.
Police Investigation Underway
During preliminary investigation, police learned that the family had attended a function earlier that evening. The accident highlights the dangers of rash driving on city roads. Authorities are examining the scene and gathering evidence to determine the exact cause of the crash.
