Yograj Singh Criticizes Family Influence on Cricketers' Career Decisions
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, has sparked controversy with his recent comments on retirement and career decisions in cricket. In a candid interview with InsideSport, Yograj expressed strong views about the role women play in influencing players' choices regarding their professional futures.
"Women Should Not Come Between Player and Legendary Prospect"
Yograj Singh made a stunning statement suggesting that wives and women in the household often pressure players to retire prematurely. "Ladies of the house, your wives, they start coaching, they tell you it's time for you to retire, it's time to look after the family, the kids, let's enjoy kids," Yograj said during the interview.
He elaborated further with a philosophical perspective: "So I believe women should not come in between the legendary prospect of a player. Fakir aur player yeh dono ka koi dharam nahi hai, warg nahi hai, they belong to god." This translates to suggesting that both ascetics and players have no specific religion or caste, as they belong to a higher spiritual realm.
Sharp Criticism of Kohli and Rohit's Retirement Timing
The former cricketer, who played one Test and six ODIs in the early 1980s, didn't hold back when discussing current stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both players have recently retired from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, now focusing exclusively on ODIs following India's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
"Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are young cricketers and they want to quit. Laanat hai zindagi bhar," Yograj stated, expressing his disapproval of their retirement decisions. He emphasized performance over age: "Make the world realize that you are the best, that you are indispensable. Even if you are fifty years old and still scoring a double hundred, no one will drop you. So this age factor is very funny in this country."
Surprising Praise for MS Dhoni
In a notable shift from his usual criticism of the former captain, Yograj Singh offered unexpected praise for MS Dhoni, who continues to play competitive cricket despite being in his forties. "He (Dhoni) is still playing and should keep on doing so for the next 10 years. Because he has proved his fitness with the right discipline and dedication," Yograj said.
He added with admiration: "I still see his forearm, amazing man. Who the hell are people to tell him to retire? No. As far as cricket is concerned, hats off to him." This marks a significant departure from Yograj's previous criticisms of Dhoni, whom he has often blamed for his son Yuvraj's career setbacks.
IPL 2026 Context and Upcoming Season
The timing of Yograj's comments coincides with the beginning of the IPL 2026 season. Virat Kohli will be representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru, while Rohit Sharma continues with Mumbai Indians. The tournament kicks off with RCB facing Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, adding immediate relevance to discussions about player longevity and retirement decisions.
Yograj Singh's outspoken nature has frequently made headlines, and these latest comments continue his tradition of speaking his mind on cricket matters. His perspective raises important questions about:
- The influence of family on professional athletes' career decisions
- Age versus performance in determining retirement timing
- The changing dynamics of cricket careers in modern times
- The balance between professional commitments and personal life
As the cricket community digests these controversial statements, they add another layer to ongoing conversations about player autonomy, career longevity, and the complex factors influencing retirement decisions in professional sports.
