Abdul Rabeeh Seeks to End Goal Drought in Indian Super League with FC Goa

In a striking statistic that has drawn attention in Indian football circles, Abdul Rabeeh has failed to find the back of the net in over 60 appearances across his career in the Indian Super League (ISL). This is particularly notable for a player renowned for his blistering pace, sharp tactical understanding, and ability to consistently position himself advantageously on the field.

Coach Manolo Marquez Highlights Key Area for Improvement

FC Goa coach Manolo Marquez has pinpointed the critical area where Rabeeh needs to enhance his game. "For me, the final decision-making is what he needs to improve," Marquez stated. "He's someone who can surpass players very fast and has good movements as a winger. I remember one season at Hyderabad when they had only one foreigner, Joao Victor, he played all games and had three or four attempts that struck the post. He didn't score but was always close."

This observation underscores Rabeeh's near-misses and potential, suggesting that with refined finishing, his contributions could be transformative for his team.

Rabeeh's Journey from Kerala to ISL Stardom

Rabeeh's footballing journey began with Luca SC in Malappuram, where he played a pivotal role in the Kerala Premier League. His performances there caught the eye of Hyderabad scouts, leading to a signing with their development side. He was subsequently promoted to the first team for the 2021-22 ISL campaign, marking his entry into the top tier of Indian football.

After spending two years at Hyderabad under Marquez, Rabeeh parted ways with SC Delhi (formerly Hyderabad) to reunite with his former coach at FC Goa. Marquez, who has known Rabeeh for a considerable time, noted significant growth in the player. "I know him for a long time. Rabeeh then, and Rabeeh now, is a completely different player. He's very positive, his attitude is very good, and he's trying to learn every day. That's good for the team," the Spanish coach remarked.

Adapting to a New Role and Setting Ambitious Goals

At FC Goa, Rabeeh has initially been utilized as a second-half substitute in the first three ISL games. However, with Marquez emphasizing the need for bench players to step up and start matches, the winger is anticipated to assume a more influential role as the season progresses.

Rabeeh expressed his commitment to the club, saying, "I knew even before joining Goa that it was difficult to start due to experienced players, but coach believed in me, trusted me, and that's why I signed for the club. I am getting some good minutes and my job is to create more chances. I am giving my 100% in every game."

The winger, who was part of the Indian squad for the 2022 Asian Games, is determined to elevate his performance. He vowed to prove himself in the remaining 10 ISL fixtures, aiming for "much better performances" and improved statistical output.

Rabeeh's Aspirations for FC Goa and National Team

Rabeeh's ambitions extend beyond club success. "Even when I was with Hyderabad for the last three years, I wanted to be at Goa, one of my favourite Indian clubs," he shared. "My aim is to win more trophies with Goa after winning the Super Cup earlier in the season and get a call for the national team. This season, with fewer foreigners, Indian players are shouldering the responsibilities. We know we can play much better than what we have done so far."

He also highlighted the supportive environment at FC Goa, crediting Marquez and the coaching staff for his ongoing development. "The coach helped me a lot when I was at Hyderabad and now, along with other staff coaches, I am learning everyday. I am looking to improve myself, do better, and when the season is over, hopefully my numbers will be better," Rabeeh concluded, setting a clear target for personal and team advancement.
