The Brandon Aiyuk trade saga has escalated dramatically. The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver posted two Instagram stories early Sunday morning, leaving no doubt about his desired destination. In the first story, Aiyuk posed shirtless in a mirror selfie wearing a Washington Commanders hat, featuring the burgundy and gold 'W' logo prominently. The follow-up story showed him holding an NFL football with the text: 'Stop capping, everyone already knows.' This unbothered trade demand is unprecedented in NFL history.
Aiyuk's Social Media Signals
This move did not come without warning. Aiyuk has been following only five accounts on Instagram: his wife, Adidas, Jayden Daniels, and the Washington Commanders. That alone had NFL fans speculating. Now, wearing the hat confirms his intentions. Aiyuk and Daniels were teammates at Arizona State before Daniels transferred to LSU and Aiyuk entered the NFL Draft. This connection makes Washington a personal preferred destination.
Contract Standoff
Aiyuk has reportedly cut off all contact with the 49ers' front office and refused to speak with other interested teams about reworking his contract. He is apparently dead set on Washington and Washington only. The 49ers are in a difficult position: the entire league knows San Francisco will eventually have to release Aiyuk, so teams have been content to wait him out rather than offer a draft pick in a trade. The 49ers want something in return, but the Commanders are not biting. Aiyuk, clearly done waiting, is now posting Commanders selfies at 1 a.m. At some point, the 49ers must blink, and these Instagram stories may have forced their hand.
Off-Field Issues
There is also the matter of an arrest warrant issued for Aiyuk last week on a misdemeanor speeding charge, after he posted a video of himself driving at 102 mph past Levi's Stadium in December. This off-field noise is something the Commanders will have to weigh, but given this morning's post, Aiyuk is clearly not losing sleep over it. The gig is up indeed.
