Margao's Dempo Sports Club is poised to launch their Indian Football League (IFL) campaign with determination as they host Real Kashmir FC at the iconic Nehru Stadium in Fatorda. The crucial season opener is scheduled for Sunday at 4 PM, marking a significant moment for both clubs in the revamped league structure.
Return of a Football Powerhouse
After months of uncertainty in Indian football, the IFL officially commenced on Friday with ten competitive teams vying for a single qualification spot in next season's prestigious Indian Super League. Dempo SC, a five-time national champion, makes its much-anticipated return to the top flight, now rebranded as the IFL, following a sixth-place finish in the previous season.
Coach Samir Naik has set clear promotion ambitions for this campaign, emphasizing that a positive result against Real Kashmir would provide essential momentum before facing four consecutive away matches. "I believe every team in the league has genuine championship potential, including our squad," Naik stated during Saturday's pre-match interaction. "We're approaching each challenge systematically. While coaches always seek improvement, I'm confident our preparation has been thorough."
Strengthened Squad with International Talent
Dempo enters the new season with a significantly enhanced roster featuring five foreign players, addressing last season's recruitment challenges. Although some international signings arrived later than ideal, each brings substantial quality to the team.
- Trinidad and Tobago striker Marcus Joseph, the club's final signing last season, emerged as top scorer with an impressive 10 goals in just nine appearances.
- The defensive line has been bolstered by the Churchill centre-back duo of Aubin Kouakou from Ivory Coast and Colombian Jose Moreno.
- Colombian attacking midfielder Sebastian Gutierrez adds creative flair to the midfield.
- Ghanaian striker Richmond Owusu, who claimed the Golden Boot in the inaugural Bengal Super League with 11 goals and 3 assists for Sundarban Bengal Auto FC, represents another exciting attacking option.
The only setback comes with Argentinian defender Damian Perez delayed due to visa complications. "All players are technically available, but we must carefully assess their match fitness," explained Naik. "Our management worked diligently to secure foreign talent early. I must emphasize that our Indian players demonstrate equal capability and readiness."

Real Kashmir FC approaches the match with their own aspirations after securing a commendable third-place finish last season. Their coach, Ishfaq Ahmed, brings unique insight having won the I-League as a Dempo player.
"Dempo represents a historically formidable opponent, particularly when playing at their Fatorda fortress," Ahmed acknowledged. "They maintain a distinct football philosophy focused on ground dominance and attractive play. In season openers, the initial twenty minutes often determine the match as teams settle nerves and establish rhythm."
