Football Bridges Divides in Conflict-Scarred Manipur Through Assam Rifles Tournament
In the northeastern state of Manipur, where historical conflicts and ethnic divisions have often created deep fractures, an unexpected force has emerged as a powerful unifier: football. Communities that have frequently found themselves on opposing sides of bitter territorial disputes came together on the football field, forging a shared identity that transcended traditional caste and ethnic boundaries.
Assam Rifles Organizes Unifying Football Tournament
The Assam Rifles, through its Operation Sadbhavna initiative, orchestrated the Foothills Football Tournament from February 9 to 12 at Keithelmanbi in Kangpokpi Tehsil of Senapati district. This significant event brought together thirteen teams representing Manipur's three major communities:
- Meitei community with three participating teams
- Naga community with eight competing teams
- Kuki community with two spirited squads
The tournament featured knockout matches characterized by exceptional sportsmanship and mutual respect among all participants.
Thrilling Final Match and Prize Distribution
The championship culminated in a thrilling final match on Thursday between New Keithelmanbi Part-II Team B (representing the Meitei community) and Haibung FC (from the Kuki community). In a high-energy contest filled with skillful plays, New Keithelmanbi emerged victorious with a decisive 5–2 scoreline.
The winning team received:
- A championship trophy
- Individual medals for all players
- Certificates of achievement
- A cash prize of ₹20,000
The runners-up were awarded ₹10,000 along with medals and certificates, recognizing their impressive tournament performance.
Individual Excellence Recognized
The tournament also highlighted exceptional individual performances:
- Athoiba Yumnam of New Keithelmanbi Team B was named Best Player of the Tournament after scoring five remarkable goals throughout the competition
- Shyamananda received the Best Goalkeeper award for his outstanding defensive skills
In a demonstration of true inclusivity, all participating teams—including those that did not reach the finals—were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates, emphasizing that participation and sportsmanship mattered as much as victory.
Community Engagement and Official Statements
Defence Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Colonel M. Rawat informed Times of India that the tournament commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony on Monday, attended by over 730 spectators. The diverse audience included:
- Senior military officials
- Assam Rifles troops
- Local club representatives
- Schoolchildren from surrounding areas
- Villagers from nearby communities
"The Foothills Football Tournament 2026 is specifically designed to promote sports culture in Manipur's foothill regions, nurture local football talent, and strengthen bonds between security forces and the community," stated Lt Col Rawat. "The enthusiastic turnout and spirited competition clearly underscore the importance of sport as a unifying force in this region."
Beyond Sport: A Peace Initiative
The Assam Rifles emphasized that this tournament represented far more than athletic competition—it was a deliberate and strategic effort to foster peace, harmony, and youth engagement throughout Manipur. "The successful conduct of the Foothills Football Tournament once again underscores our commitment to strengthening bonds among diverse communities and contributing positively toward peace and development," the Assam Rifles stated in an official release.
Football as a Language of Unity
The four-day event powerfully demonstrated how football, in its purest form, can bridge deep societal divides and create meaningful moments of unity in a strife-torn state. For Manipur, where communities have experienced long-standing fractures, the cheers and camaraderie witnessed at Keithelmanbi offered a genuine glimpse of hope—proof that the universal language of sport can indeed speak louder than the echoes of historical conflict.
This tournament serves as a compelling model for how athletic initiatives can contribute to social cohesion, demonstrating that shared goals on the football field can help build understanding and respect off it. The Assam Rifles' initiative has shown that even in regions marked by division, common ground can be found through the beautiful game.
