The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has issued a strict 24-hour ultimatum to clubs participating in the Indian Super League (ISL). The clubs must confirm their participation and state their preferred format for the upcoming season before the deadline expires.
Clubs Seek Financial Clarity
According to sources close to the developments, the clubs are expected to respond to the AIFF before Thursday's deadline. However, a significant hurdle remains, as at least eight of the fourteen clubs intend to seek additional details regarding the financial structure of the league.
The core of the dispute lies in the financial burden. With no commercial partner currently secured for the top-tier league, clubs are reluctant to shoulder extra costs. An official from one club voiced a common concern, questioning why clubs should bear all expenses when the AIFF, which owns the league, has not committed to any financial contribution. This is especially critical in a season where central revenue sharing and sponsorships are uncertain.
Format and Participation Still Unclear
The AIFF's three-member ISL coordination committee has held five meetings with club representatives since last week. Despite these discussions, there is still no final confirmation on either the league's format or the participation of all 14 teams. The league is scheduled to begin next month.
In a letter sent to club CEOs on Wednesday, AIFF's deputy secretary general, M Satyanarayan, highlighted the urgency. He stated that the federation is required to submit the outcomes of these meetings to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports before January 2. Consequently, clubs have been given time only until January 1 to confirm their participation.
Asian Spot and Scheduling Crunch
The situation is further complicated by sporting regulations. For India to secure a coveted spot in Asian competitions, all ISL clubs must play a minimum of 24 league matches in a season. Organizing a full-fledged league to meet this requirement now appears challenging due to severe time constraints.
The official season, along with player contracts, concludes on May 31, leaving a very narrow window for planning and execution. This tight schedule adds pressure on both the federation and the clubs to resolve the financial and logistical impasse swiftly.
The next 24 hours will be crucial in determining the shape and even the feasibility of the upcoming Indian Super League season.
