ISL 2025-26 Season Confirmed for Feb 14 Start, I-League to Follow
ISL to begin Feb 14, I-League around same time

In a major development for Indian football, the delayed 2025-26 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) has finally been given a start date. The league will now kick off on February 14, 2025, after being put on hold due to the absence of a commercial partner.

Government and AIFF Break the Deadlock

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya made the official announcement on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation about the league's future. The decision was reached following a crucial meeting involving the government, the All India Football Federation (AIFF), and representatives from all 14 ISL clubs, including traditional giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.

"There was a lot of speculation regarding ISL but today the government, football federation and 14 clubs had a meeting and we have decided that ISL will start February 14. All clubs will participate," Mandaviya stated clearly.

League Structure and Financial Backing Revealed

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, who was present at the meeting, provided detailed insights into the league's format and financial structure. The ISL will be played in a classic home-and-away format comprising 91 matches. Officials are currently finalizing the logistical arrangements for the extensive schedule.

Regarding the financials, Chaubey announced the creation of a central pool of Rs 25 crore dedicated solely to conducting the ISL. "10 percent of this fund will come from AIFF, 30 percent was to come from a commercial partner but since we don't have one right now the AIFF will pitch in with that contribution," he explained.

This means the AIFF will initially contribute a total of Rs 14 crore for the ISL. Additionally, the federation will provide about Rs 3.2 crore for the I-League until a commercial partner is secured.

I-League Returns with a Compact Format

The I-League, which was also paused alongside the ISL, will resume "around the same time" as the top-tier competition. All 11 I-League teams will be involved, but the league will be conducted in a shorter format with 55 matches. This move is designed to ensure the viability of both leagues running concurrently in the Indian football calendar.

New Governing Council for Future Oversight

Looking ahead, Chaubey revealed plans to establish a Governing Council Board to oversee the leagues. This board will be "empowered to take all commercial decisions," aiming to bring more stability and professional management to the league's operations in the future. This step is seen as crucial for attracting long-term commercial partnerships and ensuring the sustainable growth of professional football in India.

The announcement brings much-needed clarity and relief to players, clubs, and fans across the country, setting the stage for a packed football calendar starting in February next year.
