International football is poised to make a triumphant return to Kochi, with the city set to host India's AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong on March 31. This marks the first such match in Kochi since March 2016, ending a nine-year drought for football enthusiasts in the region.
AFC Grants Conditional Approval Following Inspection
An Asian Football Confederation (AFC) team conducted a thorough venue inspection on February 19 and 20, expressing satisfaction with the facilities at the stadium. As a result, they granted conditional approval for the match. KFA president Navas Meeran stated, "AFC officials indicated that additional work is needed at the stadium and set March 5 as the deadline to complete all activities. The suggested work is feasible and will be finished within the timeframe."
Key Preparations and Safety Measures Underway
To comply with AFC and FIFA directives, several critical steps have been taken:
- All shops within the stadium premises will be shut two days before the match, as agreed upon with shop owners.
- Gas cylinders used by restaurants around the stadium have been replaced with piped gas, addressing a major safety concern.
- GCDA chairman K Chandran Pillai affirmed the authority's commitment to meeting all regulatory requirements.

Initially, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) proposed Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi as a potential venue. However, after inspection, the AFC rejected Ranchi due to the absence of key facilities required for an international match. This decision paved the way for Kochi's selection, leveraging its existing infrastructure and readiness.
