The Toronto Maple Leafs are in full reconstruction mode after a season to forget, bringing in John Chayka as general manager, adding Mats Sundin as Senior Executive Advisor, and parting ways with head coach Craig Berube. More changes are expected. But while Toronto scrambles to find direction, a credible warning is making rounds in NHL circles: the Buffalo Sabres may be on the verge of becoming the division's most dangerous team, and a blockbuster goaltender move could push them firmly over the edge.
Are the Buffalo Sabres About to Land Connor Hellebuyck?
Buffalo's 2025-26 turnaround was one of the NHL's best stories. After an NHL-record 14-year playoff drought, the Sabres broke through under Lindy Ruff, won the Atlantic Division, and pushed to Game 7 of the second round before falling to Montreal. That alone would be enough to signal the franchise had arrived. But NHL insider Jeff Marek thinks this summer could bring something bigger.
Marek floated the idea of Buffalo pursuing Connor Hellebuyck, currently in year two of his seven-year, $59.5 million deal with the Winnipeg Jets. Hellebuyck, who helped Team USA win gold at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics, represents exactly the kind of elite goaltending that could make the Sabres a legitimate Cup contender. "Are the Buffalo Sabres in a place right now where they need to take a massive swing?" Marek questioned. "Are they a legitimate, consistent playoff team? Then, is it time to address one major concern for the Buffalo Sabres and bring in a significant netminder and pay a significant price for it? And if so, could that person be Connor Hellebuyck?"
The speculation isn't entirely out of nowhere. Hellebuyck publicly vented after Winnipeg's season-ending loss, saying, "What we did this year was unacceptable. No one wants to be part of that." The Jets may not be holding onto him as firmly as assumed.
For any deal to work, Marek noted, a substantial asset like defenceman Owen Power would likely need to be involved to satisfy Winnipeg's demands. That kind of cost is steep, but for a Sabres team trying to graduate from "surprise playoff team" to genuine threat, the calculus might make sense.
Marek issued a direct warning to the rest of the conference: "Attention Bruins, attention Tampa, Florida, Toronto, everybody, the Buffalo Sabres have arrived."
The Maple Leafs heard that loud and clear. As Toronto rebuilds from the foundation up, a rival within its own division may be strengthening its ceiling. That's a problem that doesn't go away on its own.
