Real Kashmir FC has achieved notable milestones, including back-to-back victories in the IFA Shield in 2020 and 2021. Over the seven seasons they have competed in the I-League, the club has secured a top-five finish six times, showcasing their competitive edge. Despite these accomplishments, the postponement of the season has introduced significant logistical and financial hurdles, not only for Real Kashmir but for clubs across the entire league.
Arshad Shawl, who assumed ownership as part of the leadership group in 2019, has openly addressed the turmoil plaguing the club. He attributes these challenges to a systemic reliance on a single private entity that has dominated Indian football for over a decade. "You have to understand the ecosystem of Indian football over the last 15 years," Shawl explained in an interview. "When that private support was pulled out, there was no contingency plan in place."
Navigating Financial and Geographical Obstacles
With the All India Football Federation (AIFF) experiencing financial strain, I-League clubs like Real Kashmir have been compelled to shoulder much of the operational burden themselves. For the Srinagar-based team, these difficulties are exacerbated by their unique geographical and climatic conditions. Pre-season preparations in sub-zero temperatures, combined with an unpredictable calendar, have made the task even more daunting.
Shawl vividly described the situation: "Starting this season is like starting a frozen engine in minus temperatures and asking it to run a rally." This analogy underscores the immense challenges the club faces as they strive to maintain their competitive edge amidst adverse circumstances.
Rooted in Local Identity and Development
Despite these obstacles, Real Kashmir FC remains deeply committed to its local identity. The club has consistently prioritized Kashmiri players and homegrown talent, a vision embodied by the appointment of Ishfaq Ahmed, a former India international and native of Kashmir, as head coach. Under his leadership, Real Kashmir has evolved into a platform that empowers local footballers to dream bigger and achieve more.
"This club has put Kashmir on the front pages for a happier reason," Shawl remarked. "It allowed the world to look at Kashmir through the lens of football." Beyond the first team, the club has invested in a structured youth development program, blending local prospects with experienced Indian and overseas players. A capable backroom staff further supports the squad, ensuring a holistic approach to growth and success.

"We are doing everything that we can control," he emphasized, pointing to factors such as ownership stability, player commitment, and grassroots development.
