Tim David Not Currently Available for ODIs: Coach McDonald

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has stated that big-hitting batter Tim David is not currently available for selection in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), as the team management looks to deploy him primarily as a finisher in T20 Internationals.

Speaking to the media, McDonald explained that David's role in the T20 setup is clearly defined, but the team is yet to finalize his position in the 50-over format. "Tim is not currently available for ODIs. We are looking at him as a finisher in T20s, and we want to give him clarity in that role," McDonald said.

David's Role in T20Is

David, who has played 33 T20Is for Australia, has been used in various batting positions, but the management now wants to settle him as a finisher. McDonald emphasized the importance of role clarity for players like David, who possess explosive batting abilities.

"We have identified that his best position is in the lower middle order, where he can use his power-hitting against spinners and fast bowlers in the death overs. This is a role we want to lock in for him," McDonald added.

ODI Future Uncertain

While David has been impressive in T20Is, his ODI future remains uncertain. McDonald hinted that the team might explore his inclusion in the 50-over format in the future, but for now, the focus is on T20Is.

"We are not closing the door on ODIs for Tim. But at this stage, we want to see him excel in the T20 finisher role. Once he establishes himself there, we can look at expanding his role," the coach said.

David has played only four ODIs for Australia, with his last appearance coming in 2023. With the T20 World Cup approaching, the team is keen to solidify its batting order.

Management's Strategy

McDonald also highlighted the team's overall strategy of having specialized roles for players. "In modern cricket, role clarity is crucial. We have players like Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis who can bat in different positions, but for Tim, we want a fixed role as a finisher," he explained.

The Australian team is currently preparing for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies, where David is expected to play the finisher role. The management hopes that this clarity will help David perform consistently.

David's recent performances in the Big Bash League and other T20 leagues have been impressive, and the team believes he can be a match-winner for Australia in the shortest format.

While David's absence from ODIs might raise questions, McDonald assured that the decision is in the best interest of the team's balance. "We have a strong ODI squad, and we don't want to rush Tim into that format. Let him dominate T20s first," he concluded.
