Hockey India Aims to Cultivate Domestic Coaching Talent for National Teams
As the Indian men's and women's hockey teams continue to thrive under the guidance of foreign coaches Craig Fulton and Sjored Marijne, Hockey India is setting its sights on the future. President Dilip Tirkey has announced ambitious plans to develop home-grown coaches who can eventually take charge of the junior and senior national teams.
Strategic Training Initiatives for Aspiring Coaches
In an exclusive interview, Tirkey outlined Hockey India's strategy to enhance coaching capabilities. "We are planning to either send a group of coaches abroad or get someone from outside to come and train them so that they are well prepared to take charge of the Indian teams in the coming days," he stated. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between international standards and domestic coaching expertise.
The preliminary list of candidates includes notable former players such as PR Sreejesh, Rani Rampal, Sardara Singh, Deepak Thakur, Shanmugham P, and Vickram Kanth. While the final roster may expand, these individuals represent a strong foundation for the program.
Notable Candidates and Their Coaching Credentials
- PR Sreejesh has already demonstrated coaching success, helping the Indian junior men's team secure a bronze medal at the Junior World Cup in Chennai-Madurai in December last year.
- Rani Rampal and Deepak Thakur gained valuable experience in the Women's Hockey India League, working with Soorma Hockey Club and Shrachi Bengal Tigers, respectively.
- Vickram Kanth served as the assistant coach for Tamil Nadu Dragons in the men's HIL and is currently part of the FIH coaches' program.
Tirkey emphasized the importance of specialized training, adding, "We also want drag flickers and goalkeepers, who are interested in taking up coaching as a career, to be part of the process." This focus on niche skills highlights Hockey India's comprehensive approach to coaching development.
Upcoming Challenges for the Women's Team
Meanwhile, the Indian women's hockey team faces a busy schedule after qualifying for the World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands later this year. Their next major challenge is the Nations Cup, scheduled from June 15 to 21.
The tournament will feature India competing against hosts New Zealand, along with the USA, Japan, Korea, Chile, Scotland, and France. This presents a significant test as the team strives to regain its place in the FIH Pro League after relegation last year.
To prepare, the team will embark on tours to the United States and Argentina next month, aiming to fine-tune their strategies and build momentum ahead of the competition.
Current World Rankings and Competitive Landscape
In the latest FIH rankings published on Monday, the Indian men's hockey team has slipped one spot to world No. 8, after starting the year in seventh place. The women's team maintains its position at ninth, just ahead of New Zealand.
