Indian Women's Hockey Team's New Star Lalthantluangi Eyes Senior Debut Against Argentina

The Indian women's hockey team has embarked on a crucial preparation phase for upcoming major tournaments, kicking off with a four-match series against Argentina at the Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires starting Monday. Among the 23 players vying for attention, newcomer Lalthantluangi stands out as a promising talent aiming to impress head coach Sjoerd Marijne.

From Junior Success to Senior Challenge

Lalthantluangi, a young athlete from Mizoram, brings a solid background to the senior squad. She was part of the team that clinched the Junior Asia Cup in 2024 and competed in the Junior World Cup held in Chile last year. However, her real test begins now, as Marijne pits the side against the world No. 2-ranked Argentine team. This series serves as a vital platform for players to showcase their skills and for the coach to experiment with different team combinations.

"She was hoping to get a call-up during the World Cup qualifiers itself and was heartbroken when she couldn't make it to the team. But I told her to keep faith and work hard, and she was very happy after finally getting selected," revealed Lalthantluangi's long-time coach, Miss B'tei.

A Journey of Transformation and Dedication

Lalthantluangi's hockey journey is a testament to perseverance and raw talent. She trained under Miss B'tei since 2016, when she joined the SAI Hockey Centre in Thenzawl, until her selection for the junior national camp in 2024. Initially, she had no experience in hockey, playing volleyball and football in her village. Her physical attributes caught the coach's eye during the Thenzawl Zone Middle School sports meet in 2016, leading to her selection.

"We selected her after she competed at the Thenzawl Zone Middle School sports meet in 2016. She didn't know anything about hockey then and used to play volleyball and football in her village, but we chose her since her physical attributes were very good," said Miss B'tei, who continues to mentor nearly 40 students at the Thenzawl academy.

Inspiration from Fellow Mizoram Players

Lalthantluangi draws significant inspiration from Lalremsiami, another product of Miss B'tei's coaching and a seasoned player for the Indian team. Lalremsiami has been a motivational figure, offering guidance and confidence to younger players from Mizoram.

"Lalremsiami is a huge inspiration for players from Mizoram. She gives a lot of confidence to the youngsters and helps them out in every way possible," the coach added.

Lalremsiami herself expressed pride in having her junior teammate, highlighting the challenges of reaching this elite level. "It's a proud moment for me to have my junior in the team, especially since we are both from Mizoram. I know how hard it is to reach this stage and how difficult it is to come this far," said Lalremsiami from Argentina. "As a player, she is very disciplined and it's nice to see her growth."

Boosting Morale at the Academy

Lalthantluangi's selection has ignited excitement at the Thenzawl academy, where she will become only the third player from Mizoram, after Lalremsiami and Hnialum Lalruatfeli, to represent the national women's hockey team. This achievement serves as a powerful motivator for other students aspiring to don the Indian jersey.

"The excitement at the institute is very high because another player from here has got a chance to play internationally. The other students are also very happy and motivated, hoping to play for the Indian team someday," Miss B'tei noted.

Coach Marijne's Strategic Vision

For coach Sjoerd Marijne, the Argentina series is more than just a warm-up; it's an opportunity to assess individual performances and refine team dynamics. With all 23 players set to get game time, the tour will focus on exploring various combinations and strategies to secure victories against top-tier opposition.

"We are here with 23 players, who will all get the opportunity to showcase themselves. We will use this tour as an opportunity to play with different team combinations and find ways to win," Marijne stated in a recent announcement.
