India's Pranesh M Among 12 GMs in GCL Contenders 2025

The chess world's spotlight turns to a new generation of talent as the Global Chess League (GCL) Contenders 2025 has confirmed its elite qualifiers. A total of 12 Grandmasters and International Masters, including young sensations from Argentina and India, have successfully advanced to the prestigious Knock-out Challengers Round.

Global Prodigies Take Center Stage

The tournament, which attracted a staggering over 11,500 participants worldwide across male, female, and U21 prodigy divisions, is now set for a high-stakes showdown. The prodigy section is particularly captivating, headlined by Argentina's 11-year-old Faustino Oro. Oro, who gained fame by defeating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen online and became the youngest player to hit a 2500 Elo rating in early 2025, will face formidable competition.

He is joined by Indian talent GM Pranesh M, the Chennai Grand Masters Challengers winner, alongside Belarusian Denis Lazavik and India's own GM Pranav Anand. This quartet will battle online qualifiers Rosh Jain, Gopal Krishna M, Rathina Sabapathi A, and Jvan Saurin Patel for the coveted ambassador spots.

Road to the Global Chess League Ambassadorship

The path to this stage was rigorous. Players earned their place through 18 rapid arenas in the GCL Opens and Titled Knockouts. These qualifiers will now join the titled professionals in the Challengers stage. The ultimate prize for the winners across the three categories is significant: three ambassador positions for Global Chess League Season 3, which is scheduled to commence in Mumbai from December 13.

"I've been following the Global Chess League and can't wait to test myself against strong opponents. I'm looking forward to giving my best in the prodigy section," said the excited young Argentinian, Faustino Oro.

International Lineup Across All Categories

The competition extends far beyond the prodigy division. In the men's category, four Grandmasters—Jose Martinez (Mexico), Benjamin Bok (Netherlands), Andrew Tang (USA), and India's Abhimanyu Puranik—will compete against qualifiers Diptayan Ghosh, Aradhya Garg, Alok Sinha, and Harshal Patel.

The women's section boasts a strong international field featuring IM Yuliia Osmak (Ukraine), IM Padmini Rout (India), and IM Mai Narva (Estonia). They will face a tough challenge from qualified players including Mitra Hejazipour (Iran), Rucha Pujari (India), Jesse February (South Africa), Oliwia Kiolbasa (Poland), and Angel Ruth (India).

Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, emphasized the event's mission: "GCL Contenders is designed to connect the entire chess ecosystem, from everyday players to professionals, on a single competitive platform. The arrival of Grandmasters and International Masters in this round reflects exactly that spirit." The event is held in partnership with the league's official platform partner, setting the stage for a thrilling display of world-class chess.
