The junior state hockey tournament for under-19 boys commenced in Coimbatore on Monday, marking a significant return of the event to the city after a gap of 29 years. The Tamil Nadu Hockey Association and the Coimbatore District Hockey Association are jointly organizing the junior men's inter-district hockey tournament, which will run from April 28 to May 2 across venues in Coimbatore and Tirupur.
Tournament Format and Participation
A total of 35 teams from various districts across Tamil Nadu are participating in the tournament, which follows a league-cum-knockout format. The league phase will be held in both Coimbatore and Tirupur, with teams divided into eight groups. The top teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The best-performing players from the tournament will be selected to represent Tamil Nadu in the upcoming national-level hockey tournament.
Significance of the Event
Officials from the Coimbatore District Hockey Association highlighted that the tournament is being organized in the city after a 29-year hiatus. They attributed this revival to the newly inaugurated hockey turf in R S Puram, which has created opportunities for hosting such events and encouraging young talent to pursue hockey. The tournament will serve as a crucial platform for selecting the Tamil Nadu team for the 16th National Junior Championship.
Selection Process and Standards
All matches will be conducted according to the rules and regulations of Hockey India, ensuring a high standard of competition. Members of the state selection committee will closely monitor player performances to identify talented athletes who will represent Tamil Nadu at the national level. This tournament is expected to provide a significant boost to grassroots hockey development in the region.
