Patna's First International Hockey Ground Nears Completion with Dutch Astroturf
The construction of Patna's inaugural international-standard hockey ground is now in its final phase, with authorities preparing to install a state-of-the-art Polytan Blue astroturf imported directly from the Netherlands. This advanced playing surface, widely recognized as one of the most sophisticated in international hockey, is poised to dramatically elevate training and competition standards for athletes across the state.
Project Details and Infrastructure
This significant sports facility is being developed on previously vacant land at the Rajendra Nagar Physical College campus, with an estimated total project cost of Rs8.44 crore. Upon completion, it will become the second international-standard hockey field in Bihar, following the existing facility in Rajgir within Nalanda district. Officials have set an ambitious target to complete all remaining construction work within the next month.
The ambitious turf project is being executed by the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (Buidco) and has already received formal approval from the Hockey India Federation. Federation officials conducted a recent inspection of the construction site and expressed considerable satisfaction with the progress achieved thus far.
Construction Progress and Components
Buidco managing director Animesh Kumar Parashar confirmed that the majority of the project's major components have been successfully completed. "The construction work is approximately 80% complete. Critical elements including the base construction, LED floodlight installation, and the comprehensive water management system are finished. Only the pathway, sprinkler system, and final installation of the specialized turf remain," Parashar stated.
The sprinkler system, which is absolutely essential for maintaining the quality and performance of astroturf surfaces, is currently in the installation phase. The complete stadium complex will feature an impressive array of facilities including:
- High-intensity LED floodlights for evening training and matches
- A dedicated hostel facility for visiting and resident players
- Modern changing rooms with full amenities
- A designated warm-up area for athletes
- Spectator stands to accommodate sports enthusiasts
Ground Transformation Challenges
The land selected for this groundbreaking sports facility presented substantial engineering challenges. The area was historically marshy and remained persistently waterlogged for many years, with water levels frequently reaching depths of up to two metres. Continuous water seepage, dense tall grass, and multiple swamp layers had rendered the site completely unsuitable for any sports activities.
To transform this challenging terrain into a playable international-standard hockey ground, engineers undertook extensive excavation work using heavy machinery to remove the marshy pockets. The soil was then systematically stabilized with substantial quantities of rubble. Construction teams transported thousands of trolley loads of specially selected soil to the site to properly raise and reinforce the foundation before the actual field construction could commence.
This remarkable transformation from waterlogged marshland to world-class sports infrastructure represents a significant milestone in Bihar's ongoing efforts to develop premium athletic facilities and nurture sporting talent at the national and international levels.
