Women Umpires Make History at FIH Junior Men's Hockey World Cup
Women Umpires Break Barrier at Junior Men's Hockey WC

In a groundbreaking moment for international hockey, four women umpires are making history at the ongoing FIH Junior Men's Hockey World Cup across venues in Chennai and Madurai. This landmark development represents the culmination of the International Hockey Federation's gender parity initiative launched in 2019.

Historic Selection Breaks Gender Barriers

The quartet of pioneering officials includes Ana Escalante from Mexico, Deepa from India, Lia Yao of China, and South Africa's Anneli ze Rostron. Their appointment marks the first time in the tournament's history that women are officiating at the junior men's World Cup level.

For Ana Escalante, the news came as an emotional surprise. "When I first heard the news, I assumed it was for a women's event. When I realized it was for the men's World Cup, I could not believe it," she shared with Times of India. The Mexican mother of two described the assignment as both a significant responsibility and a tremendous opportunity.

Overcoming Challenges and Breaking Stereotypes

In Mexico, where hockey doesn't enjoy widespread popularity, Escalante's achievement is particularly remarkable. She stands as one of only four women umpires in her entire country and hopes her selection will inspire other Mexican women to pursue officiating careers.

Chennai-based umpire Deepa experienced similar disbelief when receiving her appointment letter. Despite having officiated at prestigious events like Asia Cups and the Asian Games, this represents her maiden World Cup assignment. "I have had a lot of struggles, and some people tried to stop my progress. But I never lost hope. This is my biggest achievement so far, and I have to prove myself," Deepa stated with determination.

Adapting to the Men's Game

Both umpires acknowledge the differences between men's and women's hockey, particularly the faster pace of the men's game. However, they bring considerable experience to the challenge.

"This isn't the first time we'll be officiating men's matches," Escalante explained. "I've umpired men's nationals back home, so I have a fair understanding. The biggest challenge is earning the players' trust."

Deepa emphasized the essential qualities required for success: "We have to show that we are the boss on the field. Decision-making has to be quick. You need strong observation and game-reading skills. In preparation, we study each team's formations and strategies. We need to be physically fit and maintain control."

The umpires are split between the two host cities, with Escalante and Deepa officiating in Chennai while Rostron and Lia Yao manage matches at the Madurai International Hockey Stadium. This historic moment represents a significant step forward in the FIH's ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in hockey officiating worldwide.
