Abhishek Nayar Leads KKR's Practice with Focus on Mental Strength Ahead of IPL 2026
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar took charge of the team's inaugural practice session at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, delivering a powerful motivational speech to the squad. This session marks a crucial step in the build-up to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, with Nayar emphasizing the importance of mental preparation over physical skills in the final days before their first match.
Nayar's Pep Talk: Building a Winning Mindset for the Fourth Title
In his address to the players, Nayar highlighted that the team has already honed their technical abilities over the past months. He stressed that the key to success now lies in cultivating the right mentality. "We've worked on our skills in the past couple of months. We've spoken a lot. For me, what happens here on is how we tune what between our ears. The skill is there. That's not going to change in the next ten days. But what changes is our mentality," Nayar stated, as per KKR Knight Club.
He further elaborated that every moment spent on the ground and in team interactions should be directed towards a single objective: winning the franchise's fourth IPL championship. "So every moment that we spend on this ground, every moment we spend with each other, with the coaches amongst ourselves, there's one goal. We are to do one thing, we are to win, we are to get that fourth star, and we do everything to prepare our mind before our body actually arrives at the first game on the 29th," he added. Nayar encouraged the squad to use this time for communication, bonding, and enjoyment to strengthen their unity ahead of the season opener against Mumbai Indians on March 29.
Welcoming Shane Watson as Assistant Coach
During the session, Nayar also formally introduced new assistant coach Shane Watson, expressing enthusiasm about his addition to the coaching staff. He praised Watson's extensive experience, both as a renowned player and from his own interactions with him. "Everyone knows Shane Watson as a player, but I've known him as someone who's played under him, as a player, and I'm really happy. Watto, to have you with us, I think you've been a terrific addition, even in this small period that I've interacted with you," Nayar remarked.
He urged the KKR players to actively learn from Watson's insights, noting that his presence will significantly enhance the team's dynamics. "Tap into his experience. You will learn a lot. We've had a lot of good coaches, but I'm pretty sure that Shane Watson is gonna add a lot of value to us. So, Watto, welcome to the KKR family," Nayar concluded, underscoring the value of Watson's expertise in their pursuit of the title.
