Balaji Questions RR's Captaincy Gamble on Riyan Parag for IPL 2026
Balaji: RR's Parag Captaincy a Gamble for IPL 2026

Balaji Surprised by Rajasthan Royals' Captaincy Choice for IPL 2026

Former India fast bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji has voiced his astonishment at Rajasthan Royals' decision to name Riyan Parag as captain for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. In a recent interview with JioStar, Balaji highlighted the presence of more experienced players in the squad, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, and England all-rounder Sam Curran, making the move unexpected.

A Calculated Gamble with Potential Upsides

Balaji described the appointment as "kind of a gamble" but acknowledged that it could yield positive results under the mentorship of head coach Kumar Sangakkara. He emphasized that captaining in the IPL involves more than just on-field tactics; it requires strong dressing room management and earning the trust of teammates.

"Captaining in the IPL is not just about on-field decisions, it's also about managing the dressing room. Your voice and trust need to be earned. In that sense, it's a double-edged sword," Balaji explained. "With Sangakkara's guidance, though, it could be a valuable learning opportunity for Riyan. If he balances his performance with leadership, it could really help him."

Focus on Young Talent and Consistency

Balaji also turned his attention to other young prospects in the team, particularly Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He praised Sooryavanshi's talent, noting his impressive century against Gujarat Titans, but warned about the challenges of maintaining form in a second season.

"We've seen the kind of talent Vaibhav has. That hundred against Gujarat Titans was impressive, but the second season is always tougher. Opponents will have studied him, and maintaining performance will be a challenge," he said. "Sangakkara's mentorship will be key for him to build consistency."

Rajasthan Royals' IPL 2026 Fixture Highlights

The Rajasthan Royals are set for a competitive start to IPL 2026, with their opening match scheduled against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati on March 30. Key fixtures in their early phase include:

  • A March 4 clash against Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
  • An April 7 showdown with five-time champions Mumbai Indians.

These matches will provide an early test for Parag's leadership and the team's cohesion under new management.
