Bengaluru's Iconic Cricket Venue Prioritizes Safety with Comprehensive Upgrades
As the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) season opener between defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) approaches, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is buzzing with preparatory activities. The focus has shifted decisively toward safety and operational readiness following the tragic stampede in June last year that resulted in 11 fatalities during RCB's championship celebrations.
Extensive Mock Drills and Government Oversight
After undergoing multiple inspections by a government-appointed expert committee, the stadium conducted its first mandatory mock drill on Monday. This comprehensive exercise, spanning several hours, involved all key governmental agencies responsible for granting match-day clearances. Participants included representatives from the police department, public works department (PWD), Greater Bengaluru Authority officials, and officers from the health and fire departments.
During the drill, match-day scenarios were meticulously simulated with security personnel strategically positioned throughout the venue. Authorities rigorously tested baggage scanning systems and activated the stadium's advanced surveillance network, which comprises 450 cameras. Notably, 300 of these cameras are AI-powered units installed by RCB, enhancing real-time monitoring capabilities.
Logistical Reviews and Upcoming Second Drill
Officials also conducted thorough reviews of logistical arrangements, including the stadium's limited internal parking capacity of 30 vehicles and designated VIP drop-off zones. A second, more extensive mock drill is scheduled for Thursday. This upcoming exercise will involve approximately 500 volunteers unfamiliar with the stadium layout to accurately replicate real spectator movement patterns.
The Thursday drill will rigorously test multiple systems, including ticket scanning procedures, facial recognition technology, real-time spectator count display boards, and the overall responsiveness of event staff members. This comprehensive approach aims to identify and address any potential bottlenecks or safety concerns before the actual matches commence.
Enhanced Traffic Management and Stadium Access
The revamped match-day experience will extend beyond the stadium premises, with significant changes to traffic regulations. On match days, the Queens Road stretch from Minsk Square will be closed for several hours to facilitate smoother traffic flow. The main entrance on Queens Road will be restricted exclusively to team buses, VVIPs, and match officials, while all other gates will open on Cubbon Road to manage spectator entry efficiently.
