Former India pacer Umesh Yadav has shared his insights on the contrasting bowling approaches of Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. According to Umesh, Bumrah is trying too many things on the field, which might be affecting his consistency, while Bhuvneshwar is reaping the benefits of a clear and well-defined plan.
Umesh Yadav's Observations on Bumrah
Umesh noted that Bumrah, known for his lethal yorkers and unorthodox action, has been experimenting excessively with variations. "Bumrah is trying too many things—slower balls, bouncers, wide yorkers—all at once. Sometimes, this overthinking can lead to a loss of rhythm," Umesh said. He stressed that even the best bowlers need to rely on their core strengths rather than constantly changing tactics.
The Importance of a Clear Plan
In contrast, Umesh praised Bhuvneshwar Kumar's disciplined approach. "Bhuvi knows exactly what he needs to do. He sticks to his line and length, uses the swing effectively, and has a clear plan for each batsman. That clarity is paying off," Umesh explained. Bhuvneshwar has been among the wickets this season, consistently troubling batsmen with his accuracy and movement.
Lessons for Young Bowlers
Umesh, who has played alongside both bowlers, emphasized that young cricketers should learn from Bhuvneshwar's method. "In T20 cricket, it's easy to get carried away with variations. But the basics remain crucial. Bhuvi shows that sticking to a plan and executing it well can be more effective than trying too many things," he added.
The debate comes at a time when Bumrah has had mixed performances in IPL 2026, while Bhuvneshwar has been a standout performer for his franchise. Umesh's comments highlight the ongoing discussion about bowling strategies in the shortest format of the game.
