MS Dhoni to Return as Wicketkeeper for CSK in IPL 2026, Says Hussey
Dhoni Will Keep Wickets on IPL Return, Confirms CSK Coach

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of MS Dhoni in IPL 2026, and now there is clarity on his role. Despite missing nearly a month due to a calf injury, Dhoni has been training regularly with the team, but his absence from matches has left supporters disappointed.

Dhoni to Return as Wicketkeeper

CSK batting coach Michael Hussey has confirmed that Dhoni is expected to resume his duties behind the stumps upon his return, rather than playing solely as a specialist batter. Speaking on the sidelines of the match between Mumbai Indians and CSK, Hussey addressed the speculation surrounding Dhoni's role.

"I'm pretty sure he'll be behind the stumps. The biggest thing for him is that calf injury. It's just the running and late in the innings if he comes in, having to scamper those ones and twos. He just needs to make sure the calf is strong enough to withstand that," Hussey said.

Hussey emphasized that Dhoni's return depends entirely on his recovery. "But certainly from a skill perspective, we know what he can do as a keeper. We know he's batting really well, so it's just hopefully getting that confidence in the calf," he added. The team's priority is to ensure Dhoni is fully fit before stepping back onto the field.

There were earlier rumors that Dhoni might only play as an impact substitute and avoid wicketkeeping duties, but Hussey has now put those rumors to rest.

Return Likely Soon

Providing a positive update, Hussey said Dhoni is making good progress and is eager to return. "He's progressing really well. I know he's pushing hard to get back as quickly as he possibly can. I know all the fans want to see him, MS Dhoni, out there playing as well. So we're hopeful, maybe in the next few games, but we want him back as quickly as we possibly can as well," he said.

"But obviously, he needs to be close to 100 per cent ready to give his best because he's been batting well in the nets, he looks good in the nets. Just need him running hard between the wickets too."

For now, CSK are managing well and sit mid-table in the IPL standings. After their win against Mumbai Indians, CSK next face Gujarat Titans on Sunday. Fans continue to wait for Dhoni's comeback, which could happen in the next few games.
