India continued their commanding performance on Day 2 of the one-off Test against Afghanistan, with captain Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant extending the hosts' dominance. At stumps on Day 1, India had reached 368 for three, thanks to centuries from KL Rahul and Gill. The second day promises more fireworks as India looks to bat big and put Afghanistan under immense pressure.
Gill and Pant's Entertaining Partnership
The unbroken 121-run partnership between Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant has left the Afghan attack searching for answers. Gill, unbeaten on 103 off 143 balls, showcased effortless strokeplay with 11 boundaries and a six. Pant, on the other hand, played an uncharacteristically restrained knock but still managed three sixes in his unbeaten 50 off 70 balls. The pair rotated strike comfortably and punished loose deliveries without resorting to reckless aggression.
Afghanistan's Spin Struggles
Afghanistan's biggest weakness has been their spin department. With established stars unavailable, Nangeyalia Kharote and Abdul Malik lacked the penetration to challenge India's batters. Kharote conceded 95 runs in 20 overs without a wicket, while Malik went wicketless in six overs. Mohammad Saleem was the most successful bowler with 2 for 67, while pacer Ziaur Rahman impressed despite claiming only one wicket.
KL Rahul's Patient Century
KL Rahul's innings was a lesson in patience and discipline. He survived an early reprieve when a faint edge went unnoticed by the wicketkeeper, and went on to compile a measured 100 off 165 balls. His innings allowed Sai Sudharsan to play freely during their 139-run second-wicket partnership. Sudharsan looked set for a maiden Test century before falling for 81.
India's Dominant Batting Display
India's batting depth was on full display as they collected 42 boundaries and four sixes. Without launching an all-out assault, the hosts accumulated runs at a brisk pace. With the pitch expected to aid spin as the game progresses, India are firmly on course to dictate the contest and possibly force a result well before the scheduled fifth day.
Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi will be hoping for early wickets on Day 2 to keep his team in the game. However, with India's batting line-up firing on all cylinders, the visitors face an uphill battle.
