Punjab Kings bowling coach James Hopes did not mince words after his team's defeat in a high-scoring Indian Premier League encounter, describing the loss as a much-needed 'reality check' for the side. Speaking after the match, Hopes acknowledged that the bowlers had a tough outing on a flat pitch that offered little assistance, leading to a challenging chase for the opposition.
Flat pitch exposes bowling vulnerabilities
Hopes admitted that the surface was heavily tilted in favor of batsmen, making it difficult for bowlers to contain runs. 'It was a reality check for us. On such pitches, you need to be at your best, and we weren't,' he said. The bowling unit struggled to pick up wickets in the middle overs, allowing the opposition to build crucial partnerships.
Areas for improvement
The coach highlighted the need for better execution of plans, especially in the death overs. 'We need to work on our yorkers and variations. The margin for error is very small on these wickets,' Hopes added. He also praised the batting effort but stressed that the team must learn to defend totals more effectively.
Despite the setback, Hopes remained optimistic about the team's prospects in the tournament. 'This loss will help us refocus. We have a strong squad, and I am confident we will bounce back,' he concluded.
