KKR Releases Mustafizur Rahman on BCCI Orders: First IPL Release for Non-Cricketing Reasons
KKR releases Mustafizur Rahman after BCCI instruction

In an unprecedented move in the history of the Indian Premier League, the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise has been compelled to release a player for reasons entirely outside the realm of cricket. The franchise confirmed on Saturday that they have released Bangladeshi left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. This decision was taken following direct instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The BCCI Directive and KKR's Compliance

BCCI secretary Devaji Saikia clarified the board's position, stating that due to recent developments, the BCCI instructed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman. The three-time IPL champions issued a statement confirming the release, noting it was carried out after following due process and consultations. This marks the first instance where an IPL team has had to let go of a player purchased at auction for non-cricketing reasons.

The backdrop to this directive involves the recent unrest in Bangladesh. Both KKR and their high-profile co-owner, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, had faced significant criticism and attacks from various politicians and social media users in the wake of the situation. This external pressure appears to have influenced the cricketing decision.

Financial and Contractual Ramifications

The release comes after a significant financial commitment from KKR. During the mini-auction for the 2025 season held last month, KKR secured Mustafizur Rahman for a whopping Rs 9.2 crore. This price was substantially above his base price of Rs 2 crore and was the result of an intense bidding war with Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings. Rahman was one of only seven Bangladeshi players listed in the auction and the sole one to be picked.

Typically, a franchise's purse is locked after a player purchase. However, Rahman's case falls under the 'force majeure' clause – an extraordinary event beyond the control of the contractual parties. Consequently, KKR is expected to receive a full credit of Rs 9.2 crore back into their auction purse, mitigating the financial impact of this forced release. The BCCI has also assured that if KKR asks for a replacement player, permission will be granted.

A Fate Similar to Pakistani Cricketers

This development places Bangladeshi cricketers in a position reminiscent of their Pakistani counterparts. Pakistani players have been absent from the IPL since the 2009 season due to geopolitical tensions. The release of Mustafizur Rahman, following BCCI intervention, suggests a similar path for Bangladeshi players, potentially barring them from future participation in the world's richest cricket league.

The 30-year-old pacer, affectionately known as 'Fizz', had received a no-objection certificate from the Bangladesh Cricket Board to miss a home series against New Zealand to be available for the IPL. He is an experienced IPL campaigner, having played 60 matches since 2016 for franchises like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings, taking 65 wickets.

KKR has a history of featuring Bangladeshi stars. In the past, several top players from Bangladesh, including the iconic Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza, and Liton Das, have represented the Knight Riders. This release, therefore, marks a significant and unfortunate shift in that relationship, dictated by circumstances far removed from the cricket pitch.
