Latur Police Cracks Down on IPL Betting Racket in Nilanga
In a significant operation, the local crime branch of the Latur police successfully dismantled an illegal IPL betting racket in the Nilanga area, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of cash and materials valued at approximately Rs 4.5 lakh. The action, part of an intensified drive against unlawful activities in the district, was executed on Sunday following a tip-off.
Details of the Raid and Arrests
Acting on credible information, a police team led by Inspector Sudhakar Bavkar conducted a raid at Dadgi Shivar, located along the Dadgi-Bhangar Chincholi Road, around 8:15 PM. The arrested men have been identified as Lakhan, alias Baba Kamble (29), and Pawan Kamble (26), both residents of Milind Nagar Peth in Nilanga. According to authorities, they were caught red-handed while allegedly accepting bets on an IPL match between the Chennai and Delhi teams.
During the search, officials confiscated six mobile phones from various companies, documents used to record betting transactions, and other materials connected to the illegal operation. Preliminary investigations indicate that the duo was working for a Mumbai-based bookie known as 'Ravi Seth'. The accused reportedly accepted bets over phone calls and forwarded transaction details to the bookie via WhatsApp, earning a commission of 10% on the betting amount.
Police Statements and Legal Action
Latur Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe emphasized the department's commitment to curbing illegal activities, stating, "We have intensified our crackdown on illegal betting and gambling activities in the district. This action is part of a sustained effort to dismantle such networks. An investigation is underway to trace the main accused and identify others involved in the racket."
Sub-inspector Rajesh Ghadge confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under section 12(a) of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act. The police are continuing their probe to uncover further details and apprehend additional suspects linked to the betting network.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat illegal gambling, particularly during high-profile sporting events like the IPL, which often see a surge in such activities. The seizure of significant assets underscores the scale of the operation and serves as a warning to others involved in similar illicit practices.
