MI Coach Explains Suryakumar Yadav's Impact Sub Role as Precaution

Suryakumar Yadav's Impact Substitute Role in IPL Opener Clarified by Mumbai Indians Coach

MUMBAI: The appearance of India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav as an impact substitute during the Mumbai Indians' opening match of the Indian Premier League season against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday sparked curiosity among fans. However, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene has firmly addressed the speculation, attributing the decision to a precautionary measure for a minor injury the star batter is managing.

Precautionary Measure Due to Groin Tightness

Jayawardene emphasized that there are no "unwanted stories" surrounding Suryakumar's limited role. The cricketer, who recently led India to victory in the T20 World Cup, did not take the field for Mumbai Indians but contributed with an 8-ball 16 runs as the team secured a six-wicket win, marking their highest successful run chase in IPL history. "I hope we don't create unwanted stories. The camp is happy. He wanted an extra couple of days off. He had a little tight groin and was doing fielding and all that, but I knew we had another five days from this game to the next. I just wanted to give him that extra bit of time," Jayawardene explained to reporters.

The coach further noted that Suryakumar was eager to field for a few overs towards the end of the match, but the management opted for caution. "He was even keen at the end to go and field for three-four overs, but I said it's fine. So please don't create any stories. I have to take precautions. These are very valuable players, and I need them going throughout the season. These are calculated decisions that the management makes, and there is nothing beyond that," Jayawardene stated, dismissing comparisons to last season's use of impact substitutes like Rohit Sharma.

Ending a Long-Standing Opening Match Drought

Jayawardene expressed satisfaction with Mumbai Indians finally breaking their winless streak in IPL opening matches, which had persisted from 2013 to 2025. While praising the batting performance, he highlighted areas for improvement in the bowling department. "Yeah, it is brilliant. It was a good batting wicket. When they got to 220, I thought we were a bit poor on execution. We probably gave 20 runs extra. But the way Ro (Rohit) and Ryan batted was exquisite to watch," he remarked.

Tactical Bowling Adjustments for the Season

Discussing the team's strategy, Jayawardene elaborated on the bowling combinations, which influenced decisions like trading Shardul Thakur. "It was also tactical, because if we use Allah (AM Ghazanfar) and Hardik up front, we can't have too many new-ball bowlers. I needed options in the middle and at the back end, and that was the thinking when we traded Shardul. It's about thinking differently with our bowling combinations to suit different opposition and how we want to go about it," he explained, underscoring the adaptive approach planned for the upcoming matches.
