IPL 2026 Auction: Abhinav Mukund Advises MI Patience with Rs 2.75 Cr Purse
Mukund: MI Must Be Patient at IPL 2026 Mini-Auction

Former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund has urged the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise to exercise patience and maintain a long-term vision as they approach the IPL 2026 mini-auction with a relatively modest remaining purse of Rs 2.75 crore. The auction is scheduled for December 16, with live coverage on JioCinema and Star Sports Network.

Strategic Restraint Over Bidding Wars

Mukund believes that with their limited funds, the five-time champions will be better served observing the action rather than engaging in expensive bidding battles. He suggested MI will likely be content to "wait and watch all the action unfurl right around them." This cautious approach comes after the team has already completed significant squad building, retaining 17 players and making smart trades.

Mumbai strengthened their lineup by acquiring Shardul Thakur, Sherfane Rutherford, and Mayank Markande through trades, while Arjun Tendulkar was traded out. With the bulk of their team set, the auction becomes about targeted reinforcements.

Focus on Pace Bowling and Value Picks

According to Mukund's analysis, MI's primary objective at the auction will be to bolster their pace bowling department, specifically looking for backup options. He noted the franchise's historical liking for left-arm seamers, especially after releasing Reece Topley.

However, he immediately tempered expectations by stating that MI are unlikely to chase the most expensive overseas fast bowlers like Matheesha Pathirana or Anrich Nortje. "You can’t even go for the higher premium options," Mukund observed, indicating that the hunt will be for shrewd, high-value signings instead of big names.

One strategic opportunity he highlighted is using an overseas slot for a number eight batter, a position where many rival teams may have already filled their quota. "Most other teams would have exhausted their overseas slots. So this overseas slot I’ll use for it," he said, underscoring MI's ability to find the right tactical fit.

The Unmatched Eye for Uncapped Indian Talent

Where Mumbai Indians truly excel, Mukund emphasized, is in their scouting and development of uncapped domestic players. "The uncapped Indian players are something that is one of Mumbai Indians’ speciality," he stated.

He revealed that their search often goes beyond performers in tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, diving "even lower, one ring lower" to unearth hidden gems. This focus on domestic talent is crucial for balancing the squad within salary cap and overseas player constraints.

Broader Shift: The Rising Importance of Trades

Mukund also commented on the evolving dynamics of team building in the IPL, pointing to the growing significance of the trade window. With new regulations requiring players to register for mega auctions, player prices have become more unpredictable.

"You don’t know what price a certain player will go at," he explained, making a strong case for pre-auction trades. "So it’s better that you negotiate a price beforehand… something that is in your control." He predicted that active trading periods will become a standard part of the IPL ecosystem moving forward.

As the ten franchises prepare for the auction with a collective purse of Rs 237.55 crore to fill key gaps, Mumbai Indians' strategy, as outlined by Mukund, will be one of disciplined targeting, leveraging their scouting network, and avoiding the frenzy for premium names.
