Prithvi Shaw's Renewed Focus for Delhi Capitals IPL Comeback
Returning to the Indian Premier League after a year away, Delhi Capitals batter Prithvi Shaw appears noticeably calmer, more focused, and mentally fortified. The Mumbai-born cricketer reflects on learning from past excesses that once threatened to derail a promising career early on.
Finding Comfort in Familiar Surroundings
Wearing the Delhi Capitals jersey at Delhi's Ferozeshah Kotla ground makes Prithvi Shaw feel most at home. As the new IPL season approaches, observers note the once-hyped batter has shed several kilograms, signaling a physical transformation to match his mental evolution.
His thought process has similarly acquired a fresh outlook. Having been 'axed' from the IPL last year, Shaw now views the break as beneficial rather than detrimental. "I went to a couple of places to refresh my mind. It was a good break for me. I've enjoyed my life a lot. I can't say that I took a step back," he said about going unsold last season.
Mental Strengthening Through Adversity
The IPL exclusion wasn't Shaw's only challenge. He was compelled to move from Mumbai to Maharashtra after selectors dropped him in the previous domestic season. For a cricket association that had promoted him as a prodigy since age 13, the rejection felt particularly harsh.
"When I was dropped from the Mumbai team for a year, I felt the reason given to me was not valid. Even then I just smiled and left," Shaw revealed. "A lot of offers from other states started coming my way but I chose Maharashtra because it was closer to Mumbai."
The break provided unexpected benefits. "It allowed me to strengthen myself mentally. When I came back, it was the same routine. I trained and worked hard. Whatever I used to do earlier, I started doing it three times more," he explained before Delhi Capitals' intra-squad practice match.
Navigating Controversy and Media Scrutiny
Gossip and unwanted headlines have followed Prithvi Shaw for years. He has experienced both the glittering highs of cricketing fame and significant off-field embarrassments. Now at 26, he's determined to change his trajectory.
"I didn't write anything about myself. The media did," he said regarding early hype about his talent. "I'm a human being. I will make mistakes. It's been many years. I must have made some mistakes in my life."
As controversies mounted around four years ago, Shaw says he relied on a tight circle of associates to maintain equilibrium. "Whatever is written outside, people know only half of it. My family and friends know me," he stated.
A More Selective Social Approach
Shaw has deliberately narrowed his social circle. "I have kept only as many friends in my life as my fingers. I only train with my childhood coach. I don't reach out to anyone," he explained.
He acknowledges that media coverage once affected him deeply. "I was very young, obviously. Whenever there were good or bad things on social media and in newspapers, it started to affect me. Now, I have stopped seeing those things. Now, I believe in myself."
Looking Forward with Confidence
A flashy engagement ring on his finger symbolizes Shaw's personal growth and changing priorities. When asked about calming rituals, he smiled and said, "Nothing. No rituals. No yoga or meditation. Just the engagement ring."
Regarding an India comeback, Shaw is unequivocal: "It will be wrong if I say I'm not thinking about a comeback. I'm playing for that. Who doesn't want to play for India?"
He concludes with perspective gained through experience: "I know where I come from and how hard I have worked to reach here. Humans make mistakes but that's history. I feel I am very happy mentally. This is my passion. No one can take this away from me. I think sometimes we take ourselves too seriously."
