Rajasthan Royals Manager's Dugout Phone Incident Sparks BCCI Investigation
The Rajasthan Royals are embroiled in an off-field controversy just ahead of their crucial IPL match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The central figure in this unfolding drama is team manager Romi Bhinder, whose presence in the dugout for today's game hangs in the balance due to a potential breach of league protocols.
Protocol Breach Allegations Surface
During the previous encounter against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati, Bhinder was reportedly observed using a mobile phone within the team's designated dugout area. This action is believed to contravene the strict "PMOA (Players and Match Officials Area) Protocol - 2026," which explicitly prohibits mobile phone usage in specified team and match official zones to maintain integrity and security.
BCCI Adopts Cautious Approach
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed that the matter is under active review. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that the board will not rush to any conclusions without a thorough examination of all available evidence. In a statement to TimesofIndia.com, Saikia clarified, "Certain individuals, including managers like Romi Bhinder, are permitted to carry phones in the dugout. However, we must meticulously investigate the exact location of the incident and the nature of the phone's usage. An internal review will precede any final decision."
He further added, "We cannot act solely on hearsay. Our process involves scrutinizing photographs, video footage, and any other relevant materials before reaching a logical and fair conclusion." This measured response underscores the BCCI's commitment to due process in handling such sensitive issues.
Uncertainty Over Dugout Access
As of now, the issue has not been formally presented to the IPL Governing Council, leaving Bhinder's participation in restricted areas uncertain. A definitive ruling on whether he will be allowed inside the dugout for the upcoming match against Sunrisers Hyderabad remains pending, adding an element of suspense to the team's preparations.
Visual Evidence Intensifies Scrutiny
The controversy gained traction after cameras allegedly captured Bhinder using the phone while the Rajasthan Royals were actively chasing a target. In the footage, young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was also seen glancing at the screen, sparking widespread debate about adherence to PMOA zone regulations. This visual evidence has heightened concerns over protocol compliance and potential implications for match integrity.
Standard Procedures Underway
According to established protocols, match referee Vengalil Narayanan Kutty, who officiated the Guwahati match, is expected to submit a post-match report. It is yet to be confirmed whether this incident has been formally documented in that report. Anti-corruption officers were present during the fixture, ensuring that all aspects of the game were monitored for any irregularities.
The Rajasthan Royals now face not only the challenge of their on-field performance but also the distraction of this off-field inquiry. As the BCCI continues its investigation, the cricket community awaits clarity on how such breaches are addressed to uphold the spirit and regulations of the IPL.
