RCB's Josh Hazlewood to Miss Initial IPL Matches, Awaits Cricket Australia Clearance

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will face a delay in welcoming fast bowler Josh Hazlewood to their squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The Australian pacer is set to return only after receiving clearance from Cricket Australia, as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained in November.

Injury Recovery and Return Timeline

RCB director of cricket Mo Bobat confirmed on Tuesday that the franchise is closely collaborating with Cricket Australia and medical staff to monitor Hazlewood's progress. The 35-year-old, who played a pivotal role in RCB's IPL 2025 title victory, has not participated in any matches since his injury during the Sheffield Shield. His absence also extended to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, as he had not fully recuperated.

Bobat elaborated, "Josh has missed significant cricket recently due to injuries. He is currently undergoing a structured return-to-play programme in Australia. Our medical teams are in daily communication with Cricket Australia to ensure his rehabilitation is on track. We anticipate his arrival once they give the green light, and we hope to have him with us soon."

Bowling Options and Team Strategy

Despite Hazlewood's unavailability and Yash Dayal being ruled out for personal reasons, Bobat expressed confidence in the team's bowling depth. He highlighted the domestic fast bowlers in the squad as viable replacements.

  • Rasik: A known performer with prior experience.
  • Abhinandan: Retained from the previous season.
  • Mangesh: Recently signed in the auction, adding fresh talent.

Bobat stated, "We have three excellent domestic options who can step up in Hazlewood's absence, ensuring our bowling attack remains competitive."

Special Jersey Initiative and Season Opener

In a unique move, the defending champions announced that all players will wear jersey number 11 during pre-match training sessions throughout the IPL. This gesture is aimed at fostering team unity and spirit as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

RCB will kick off their IPL campaign on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The team is focused on building momentum early in the season, even without key players, as they aim to defend their title.
