The DC management was highly reluctant to part ways with Rizvi, and this demand became the ultimate dealbreaker.
The Stubbs-Samson trade was so close to being finalized that it reached the ears of senior players within the Delhi Capitals unit, as well as some prominent overseas names associated with the franchise. With these negotiations ending abruptly, Rajasthan Royals swiftly returned to the negotiating table with Chennai Super Kings.
Chennai Super Kings Re-enter the Fray
With the DC deal off the table, the Samson trade conversation is now firmly on the CSK table. This isn't the first time the two franchises have discussed this move, but the intent is now much stronger from RR's side, fueled by the collapse of other options.
During this period, the five-time champions are understood to have reached out to their star all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, to understand his future plans and mindset. CSK entrusted one of their sharpest administrators with the responsibility of having a tough conversation with Jadeja to gain clarity on his future with the franchise.
The potential trade being discussed is not a simple one-for-one swap. On the table is a complex deal that could involve Jadeja and Samson, plus another CSK player. Rajasthan Royals, aiming to extract maximum value, have shown interest in either Matheesha Pathirana or Sam Curran. Names like Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube also came up in discussions but were reportedly rejected by the CSK think tank.
What a Samson Trade Means for CSK and MS Dhoni
This potential acquisition has significant implications for Chennai Super Kings, particularly concerning the future of their iconic captain, MS Dhoni. While CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has publicly stated that the franchise is "extremely hopeful" of seeing Dhoni back on the field in 2025, the arrival of a proven wicketkeeper-batsman like Samson could alter those plans.
If the Samson deal materializes, it could potentially change or reduce the legendary former captain's role to far fewer appearances, signaling a strategic shift for the team's leadership and batting lineup.
