Sarfaraz Khan Praises Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Mindset and Skill

Mumbai: Long before Sarfaraz Khan became a household name by smashing sixes in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals, the domestic cricket 'run machine' was impressed by a young talent. In January 2024, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar against Mumbai at just 12 years and 284 days old, becoming the youngest Indian first-class debutant in decades. Although he scored 19 and 12 in that match, Sarfaraz saw great potential.

Sarfaraz on Sooryavanshi's Rise

Sooryavanshi later broke Chris Gayle's record of 59 sixes in an IPL season in 2026. Sarfaraz, speaking at the jersey launch of Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs for the T20 Mumbai League, said, 'He's a very good friend and we stay in touch. I first saw him during his Ranji debut against Mumbai. Even then, I could see his great skill. He can play both red-ball and white-ball cricket very well.'

Mindset Makes the Difference

Sarfaraz emphasized that Sooryavanshi's mindset sets him apart. 'His mindset and preparation are different. Anyone can succeed with hard work. He has worked extremely hard on his game,' said the 28-year-old Mumbaikar.

Sarfaraz's IPL Comeback

Sarfaraz made an IPL comeback with Chennai Super Kings in 2026 after stellar performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (329 runs at a strike rate of 203.08) and Vijay Hazare Trophy. He scored 161 runs in eight IPL matches at a strike rate of 169.47. 'I enjoy working hard. I don't like sitting idle. I needed to improve my white-ball game and fitness. The results have been positive,' Sarfaraz said.

Learning from CSK

Despite losing his place mid-season to Urvil Patel, Sarfaraz valued his time with CSK. 'I feel lucky to have been part of CSK. I spent two months there and learned a lot. We discussed cricket and always tried to learn new things. One thing I learned is to keep things simple,' he added.

On Selection Criteria

When asked about the debate over IPL performances vs domestic cricket for India selection, Sarfaraz said, 'Whether it's the IPL or any other tournament, your job is to perform. Selectors will do their job; players have to focus on theirs.'

T20 Mumbai League Preparations

Sarfaraz will lead Aakash Tigers in the T20 Mumbai League starting Monday at Wankhede Stadium. With monsoon rains expected, mentor Praveen Amre said, 'Mumbai's cricketers are used to playing in all kinds of conditions and wickets, so they'll adapt well.'
