Shashank Singh Predicts Punjab Kings Will Clinch IPL 2026 Title
After a narrow defeat in the 2025 Indian Premier League final, Punjab Kings batsman Shashank Singh is brimming with confidence that his team will secure the championship this season. The franchise ended a ten-year drought by reaching the final last year, only to fall short by six runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a thrilling contest.
Unwavering Belief in Team Success
Despite the heartbreak of that loss, Shashank remains optimistic about the upcoming final, scheduled for May 31 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. "I know that on May 31st, we will be playing at the Chinnaswamy and lifting the cup. It's not just a feeling, I know this. This will happen," Shashank declared. He attributed this confidence to strong self-belief and team cohesion, noting that everyone is aligned and confident in their abilities.
Punjab Kings had a standout campaign in 2025, topping the league stage with nine wins from 14 matches and defeating Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 to advance to the final. Looking ahead, Shashank stressed the importance of staying grounded and not resting on past achievements. "We will take it match by match because the ultimate aim is to get a trophy," he said, warning against the pressure of dwelling on last season's success.
Focus on Upcoming Matches and Team Stability
Shashank highlighted the team's immediate goals, starting with their first game against Gujarat Titans, followed by matches against Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. He made these remarks during the ‘JioStar Press Room’, underscoring the franchise's stable core under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting, with 21 players retained from last season.
"To play the final and win is the ultimate goal. But we have to focus on every match, rectify our mistakes that will be easier. We are very motivated and excited that we are the same group. We are better prepared than last year," Shashank added, emphasizing the team's improved readiness and collective motivation.
Embracing Role and Personal Development
Shashank also discussed his evolution as a lower middle-order batsman, a role he has come to embrace. "It's important to love the role. Earlier I also used to think I am a top-order batter and I have been thrown down the order. But then I fell in love with the role," he shared. He noted that success in this position requires backing from the team management and the freedom to play high-risk cricket.
Reflecting on his preparation, the 34-year-old revealed that personal milestones will take a backseat this season. "It is more a mental game than skill game during the IPL. The past year didn't go well for me as I had a spate of injuries and I couldn't play competitive cricket much," he explained. His primary focus is on making an impact for the team, with individual goals secondary. "My biggest goal is to make an impact for the team. Individual goal will be secondary because I want the team to win and I want a photo with the cup," Shashank stated.
Addressing Pressure on Emerging Players
Shashank acknowledged the increased scrutiny on young talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya, who impressed last season. "It won't be difficult but teams will be better prepared and there will be pressure of performance this year. We all know what IPL is. There will be expectation from them," he said. Drawing from his own experience, he emphasized the importance of backing up a strong debut season to avoid being labeled a one-year wonder.
"Like last year for me, I didn't want to be a one-year wonder, a lot of time we see that happening. Those who do well in one season their second season become really important because every team is planning for us and there is fan, owner, franchise pressure, performance pressure to match the previous season," he added, highlighting the challenges of sustaining success in the competitive IPL environment.
