Suryakumar Yadav extended his best wishes to the Indian cricket team after being replaced as the T20I captain by Shreyas Iyer. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England on Saturday, with Iyer taking over the leadership role. Shortly after the announcement, Suryakumar shared a supportive message on his Instagram story, writing: 'Wishing this highly skilled group all the best for challenges ahead.'
Historic Selection: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Becomes Youngest India Player
The squad announcement also created history as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earned his maiden India call-up. At 15 years and 71 days old, he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record as the youngest player ever selected for an Indian cricket team. Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989.
Upcoming Tours: Ireland and England Series
India will first tour Ireland for two T20Is on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match T20I series against England from July 1 to 11. These series will mark a new chapter under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy.
Shreyas Iyer Returns to T20I Side
Shreyas Iyer returns to India's T20I side for the first time since the match against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision, stating: 'We have got a bit more time for the next World Cup, and his performances as captain having won the IPL with KKR and a couple of good seasons with PBKS. He was very close to always being there in the team but could not find the spot.'
Suryakumar Yadav's Form Leads to Leadership Change
Agarkar also revealed that Suryakumar Yadav's form over the last two seasons influenced the decision to make a change in leadership. As a result, Suryakumar lost both the T20I captaincy and his place in the squad. Despite this, he chose to support the team publicly.
