Vettori Slams SRH's 'Poor' Bowling After IPL 2026 Opening Loss to RCB
Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori delivered a blunt assessment of his team's performance after a disappointing start to the IPL 2026 season, describing their bowling effort as "one of our poorer performances" following a six-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday.
RCB's Dominant Chase Overshadows SRH's Competitive Total
Despite posting a competitive total of 201/9 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, SRH found themselves outplayed as RCB chased down the target with remarkable ease, reaching victory in just 15.4 overs. The chase was powered by explosive batting from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, who capitalized on SRH's bowling inconsistencies.
Vettori admitted the game slipped away from his team despite an early breakthrough. "You have to get a good start, which we did against Phil Salt, but we weren't at our best with the ball. We weren't as disciplined as we needed to be," the former New Zealand captain stated in the post-match analysis.
Bowling Inconsistencies Prove Costly for Hyderabad
The SRH coach highlighted how his bowlers failed to maintain pressure after the early wicket, allowing Kohli and Padikkal too many scoring opportunities. "We gave a lot of scoring chances to Virat and Padikkal, who played exceptionally well. We should have been able to maintain a little bit more discipline after that wicket," Vettori emphasized, pointing to inconsistent lengths as a major factor in the loss.
Vettori contrasted SRH's performance with RCB's bowling execution, noting that his team failed to implement lessons learned. "We learned a lot from how RCB bowled... but we just weren't able to implement that," he said, singling out debutant Jacob Duffy for setting the benchmark with his accurate lengths on the batting-friendly surface.
200 No Longer a Safe Total in Modern IPL Cricket
In a telling admission about the evolution of T20 cricket, Vettori acknowledged that scores of 200 are no longer considered safe on modern batting pitches. "Maybe a couple of years ago you'd think 200 is safe, but we understand where the game's gone and how destructive that RCB batting line-up is," he explained, underscoring the need for bowling units to adapt to higher scoring environments.
While the bowling came under intense scrutiny, Vettori expressed confidence in his batting unit, praising contributions from players like Aniket Verma and the overall depth in SRH's top order. However, with young bowlers such as David Payne and Harsh Dubey still developing at the IPL level, the team faces immediate challenges in regrouping for upcoming matches.
The opening defeat serves as an early wake-up call for Sunrisers Hyderabad as they look to address bowling discipline issues before their next fixture in what promises to be a highly competitive IPL 2026 season.
