Nearly 900 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the riots that erupted following Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) Champions League victory over the weekend. The clashes, involving youth and police in Paris and other cities, marred the victory celebrations. Shops were looted and vandalized, and cars were set ablaze, according to AFP reports.
Interior Minister Reports Arrests and Injuries
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told public broadcaster France Inter, “We’ve had more than 890 arrests. In total, that's 45 percent more than last year.” He added that approximately 180 law enforcement officers were wounded during the riots.
President Macron Condemns Violence
The PSG team was received by French President Emmanuel Macron at his residence, the Elysee Palace. He denounced the “unspeakable violence,” expressing that PSG are a source of immense pride for France. “Enough. We are fed up,” he said, referring to the violence. “This is not football, this is not sport, this is not what we love.”
Casualties and Damage
The riots left one person dead and over 200 injured. During the celebrations around the Paris ring road, one man died while riding his motorbike. Authorities also reported stabbings and other attacks.
Second Consecutive Title for PSG
This was Paris Saint-Germain's second consecutive Champions League title and the second in the club's history. The violence mirrors their previous Champions League victory celebrations in May last year, which injured 201 people and led to over 500 arrests.
