Jordan Chiles Reveals Racism in Gymnastics Career on Keke Palmer Podcast
Jordan Chiles Opens Up About Gymnastics Racism

Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles has bravely revealed the deep-seated stereotypes and racial discrimination she encountered during her early gymnastics career. In a powerful and candid discussion on Keke Palmer's popular podcast "Baby, this is Keke Palmer," the celebrated athlete opened up about not fitting the traditional image of what a gymnast should look like.

The Unspoken Standards in Gymnastics

Chiles explained that during her formative years in the sport, she constantly felt she didn't match the expected appearance of a typical gymnast. "There's a typical way of how gymnasts were supposed to be, and it was, you know, skinny girls, white, blonde ponytails," Chiles shared during the emotional conversation. She recalled how this narrow definition made her feel her appearance wasn't considered professional enough for the sport.

Podcast host Keke Palmer immediately recognized these comments as reflecting deeper systemic issues. "So yet again, another form of racism, microaggressive, subtle," Palmer responded, validating Chiles' experiences and highlighting the underlying racial biases in gymnastics.

Painful Childhood Memories of Discrimination

The Olympic champion revealed an even more personal incident of discrimination from her childhood training days. "Actually, it's in my book; my coach didn't believe my mom was my mom because I was black, but my mom's Latin," Chiles disclosed. The coach had questioned, "That's not your mom. Why can't that be my mom?" despite Gina Valesquez Chiles being her biological mother.

Chiles maintained strong clarity about her identity throughout these challenging experiences. "It's my mama. And she's like, I have no other mother," she asserted during the podcast conversation. The gymnast comes from a multicultural background, born to Timothy Chiles, who is African-American, and Gina Valesquez Chiles, who is of Latin American descent.

Balancing Multiple High-Pressure Careers

Despite these early challenges, Chiles has emerged as one of the most inspiring figures in global gymnastics. Her resilience extends beyond the mat as she currently manages an incredibly demanding schedule. The athlete is simultaneously completing her senior year at UCLA while competing in Season 34 of Dancing with the Stars.

Chiles shared her strategic approach to managing these commitments: "This quarter, I told my coaches and my academic counselor, 'Hey, can we make sure everything is online? Because that's going to be the easiest for me.'" This flexible arrangement allows her to maintain focus during this crucial academic and professional period.

Her athletic achievements continue to shine brightly. Chiles previously led the UCLA Bruins to the NCAA Championship finals, where they finished as runners-up. Her journey represents incredible strength and determination both in sports and personal life, serving as an inspiration to athletes facing similar challenges worldwide.
