Mexico's teenage sensation Gilberto Mora has put an end to mounting speculation surrounding his future by signing a new three-year contract with Club Tijuana, committing himself to the club where his remarkable rise began despite attracting interest from some of Europe's biggest teams.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder arrives at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the youngest player at the tournament and one of the most exciting prospects in world football. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and AC Milan have all been linked with the Mexican international, but Tijuana have secured what they describe as the biggest player contract in the club's history.
The agreement not only keeps Mora at the Liga MX side but also hands him Tijuana's iconic No. 10 shirt, a symbolic recognition of both his achievements and the club's belief in his future.
From Tijuana academy prospect to Mexico's biggest young talent
Mora's connection with Club Tijuana goes back to his childhood. Born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, he moved with his family to Tijuana at the age of six and officially joined the club's academy when he was 10 years old. The son of former professional footballer Gilberto Mora Sr., he grew up idolising Cristiano Ronaldo and steadily progressed through Tijuana's youth system before being formally registered with the first team on July 1, 2024. His rise from that point was remarkably quick, turning him into one of the most talked-about young players in Mexican football.
At just 15 years and 308 days old, Mora made his Liga MX debut, becoming the youngest player in Club Tijuana history. During that same appearance, he also became the youngest player ever to register an assist in Mexico's top flight.
Less than two weeks later, he broke another record by becoming the youngest goalscorer in Liga MX history.
His rise continued internationally. In January 2025, Mora became the youngest player ever to represent Mexico, and his reputation only grew from there.
Gold Cup hero and youngest World Cup player
Mora enters the World Cup having already rewritten several record books. Last year he started for Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final victory over the United States in Houston at the age of 16 years and 265 days. The triumph made him the youngest player of any nationality ever to win a senior international tournament.
He now heads into a home World Cup as Mexico's youngest-ever international and the youngest player in the entire 2026 tournament.
Mexico will open the World Cup against South Africa, with Mora expected to be one of the standout young players on football's biggest stage.
Historic contract includes pathway to Europe
While the new agreement keeps him in Tijuana, it has been carefully structured with his long-term future in mind.
Sources told ESPN that the contract includes a "highly tailored and clearly structured release mechanism" designed jointly by the club, Mora and his representatives. The arrangement acknowledges the likelihood of major European offers arriving during the course of the deal while providing a clear framework for any future move.
His representative, Rafaela Pimenta, described the agreement as one that establishes "a clear pathway for the opportunities ahead."
At present, Mora is already among the highest-valued Mexican players in Liga MX. According to Transfermarkt, his market value stands at €10 million, approximately $11 million USD, placing him among the most valuable footballers in the world born in 2008.
"My focus is on helping the team and giving everything for Mexico"
Despite the growing attention surrounding him, Mora insisted his immediate focus remains on both Tijuana and the national team.
"I am very grateful to Club Tijuana. This club has helped me tremendously to grow as a player and as a person."
"This motivates me even more to continue working hard and improving every day. Right now, my focus is on helping the team and giving everything for Mexico in this World Cup."
Tijuana president Jorge Alberto Hank described the teenager as a player who represents everything the club stands for.
"Gilberto represents the best of Club Tijuana. He is an exceptionally talented player, but also a young man whose character, humility, and ambition make him a magnificent ambassador for our club."
"This is a historic agreement for our club, but it is also a reflection of the relationship we have built with Gilberto and his team."
"Everyone involved shares the same goal: to ensure that every decision made today supports the next stage of Gilberto's career."
"We understand the responsibility that comes with backing a talent like Gilberto. There has been complete alignment in making decisions that benefit both the player and the club as he continues his journey."
"He has a very special future ahead of him"
Pimenta also highlighted the maturity that has impressed those closest to the player's development.
"Gilberto's achievements at such a young age have been extraordinary, but what has impressed us most is his maturity, professionalism, and determination. He has a very special future ahead of him."
"We are grateful for the role Club Tijuana has played in Gilberto's development and proud to reach this important milestone together after lengthy negotiations."
"This agreement ensures he has the best possible environment to continue his extraordinary progress, while also establishing a clear path for the opportunities that await him."
"At just 17 years old, he now has the opportunity to showcase those qualities on the biggest stage of all, a FIFA World Cup hosted on home soil, and we have full confidence that he will rise to the occasion."
For now, any talk of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City or AC Milan has been placed on hold. Mora's immediate attention is fixed on helping Mexico at a home World Cup, while Tijuana supporters can continue watching the club's academy graduate and resident wonderkid develop before what many believe is an inevitable move to European football.
The next chapter of Mora's remarkable rise begins on Thursday, 11 June, when Mexico kick off the 2026 FIFA World Cup against South Africa. As the youngest player at the tournament, the 17-year-old will have the opportunity to showcase his talent on football's biggest stage in front of a home crowd and continue a journey that has already made history.
