Adkar and Yamalapalli Make History with First BJK Cup Wins for India
In a remarkable turnaround at the BJK Cup Asia/Oceania Group 1 tie in New Delhi, Vaishnavi Adkar and Sahaja Yamalapalli secured their first-ever victories while representing the Indian national team. Their performances led India to a commanding 3-0 win over New Zealand, showcasing the depth of talent in Indian women's tennis.
Vaishnavi Adkar's Emotional Victory After Debut Setback
Just a day after a disappointing debut loss to Indonesia's Aunchisa Chanta, where nerves seemed to get the better of her, Vaishnavi Adkar bounced back with a stellar performance against New Zealand's Aishi Das. The 21-year-old, who recently became India's top-ranked player, displayed improved control and confidence, winning 6-2, 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 30 minutes.
"This is something I have been looking forward to for so many years," an emotional Adkar told reporters after the match. "Being able to get the win is really special because it means a lot. There is a lot of emotion behind it, especially when it's at home with crowd support."
Adkar capitalized on World No. 1151 Das's inconsistent play, closing out the first set with an ace—a stark contrast to her serve struggles the previous day. Although Das broke back to level the second set at 4-4, Adkar immediately responded, forcing errors to secure the victory.
She attributed part of her improved performance to the changing weather conditions in Delhi. "When it's cold, the ball travels faster, and when it's warm, it feels heavy and slow," Adkar explained. "It was more controlled today, which really helped me."
Sahaja Yamalapalli Breaks Through with Maiden Win
Sahaja Yamalapalli also celebrated a long-awaited milestone, notching her first win in India colors after a series of tough matches. Since her debut against China in 2024, she had faced defeats against teams including New Zealand, Thailand, Korea, Slovenia, and the Netherlands.
Coming off a three-set loss to Patcharin Cheapchandej, Yamalapalli showed resilience, dispatching New Zealand's Valentina Ivanov 6-1, 6-3 in just 76 minutes. Her victory ensured an unbeatable lead for India in the tie.
"I'm happy to get one win under my belt," Yamalapalli said. "I know my record hasn't been great, but I've played really tough matches. I want to take it one match at a time and focus on what I can do."
After being broken early, Yamalapalli won eight consecutive games to take control. Ivanov attempted a comeback in the second set, but Yamalapalli sealed the match on her first opportunity, forcing an error from her opponent.
Complete Dominance for India
The Indian team's dominance was further emphasized when Rutuja Bhosale and Ankita Raina secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Monique Barry and Erin Routliffe, making it a clean sweep for India. This win followed India's 1-2 loss to Thailand on Day 1, highlighting a strong rebound.
Other results from the BJK Cup Asia/Oceania Group 1 included:
- Day 1: India 1-2 Thailand, Korea 3-0 Mongolia, New Zealand 1-2 Indonesia
- Day 2: India 3-0 New Zealand, Indonesia 3-0 Mongolia, Korea 3-0 Thailand
These victories not only boost India's standing in the competition but also mark significant personal achievements for Adkar and Yamalapalli, signaling a promising future for Indian tennis on the international stage.
