In a thrilling display of attacking football, Brazil maintained their 92-year record of not losing an opening World Cup match, playing out a 1-1 draw with Morocco at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday.
First Half Action
Morocco dominated the early stages, creating numerous chances. Ismael Saibari put the African champions ahead in the 21st minute, converting Brahim Diaz's pass past Alisson. However, Brazil responded in the 32nd minute when Vinicius Jr cut inside from the left and fired a powerful shot into the top corner to level the score.
Both teams had opportunities before halftime. Lucas Paqueta almost scored with a scissor kick, but Bono made a fine save. Brazil's Roger Ibanez and Casemiro received yellow cards.
Second Half Battle
Brazil controlled possession after the break, with Raphinha coming close on several occasions. Bono made crucial saves to deny Raphinha, while Alisson produced a brilliant double save in stoppage time to keep the score level. Ten minutes of added time were played, but neither side could find a winner.
Brazil held 51.2% possession and registered 13 shots, while Morocco had 14 attempts. Both teams shared a point each in the group stage.
