Diego Pavia entered the 2026 NFL Draft with expectations of being selected. However, after seven rounds, no team called his name. The Heisman Trophy runner-up, who produced at an elite level in college, faced an unexpected silence that has become a major talking point following the draft.
Alternative Leagues Gain Attention
Although Pavia accepted a rookie minicamp invitation from the Baltimore Ravens, his path to the NFL remains uncertain. Minicamp invites offer an opportunity but no guarantee, and quarterback competition is fierce. Consequently, attention has shifted to alternative leagues that could provide a clearer role.
The United Football League (UFL) is a natural fit for Pavia. His mobility, ability to extend plays, and improvisational skills align well with the UFL style. Analyst Pat McAfee commented on X, saying, “If it doesn’t work out… is he not the UFL QB blueprint?” This sentiment highlights how Pavia’s talents might be better utilized outside the NFL system.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Football League (CFL) presents an even more direct opportunity. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold Pavia’s negotiating rights, giving them control if he chooses that route. Unlike the NFL’s short tryout window, the CFL offers a more stable entry point.
Jon Gruden Clip Resurfaces
As discussions about Pavia’s future intensified, a pre-draft clip of him speaking with Jon Gruden resurfaced. In the clip, Gruden asked about Pavia’s agent. Pavia replied, “No, I’m representing myself,” adding that he did not want anyone taking a percentage of his earnings.
While that response seemed confident at the time, it raised questions after the draft. Although it did not solely determine his outcome, it added to existing concerns about his size and arm strength. When doubts accumulate, teams often look elsewhere.
Agent Malki Kawa later clarified on X, stating, “He didn’t have an NIL agent. I am his agent for the NFL.” This cleared up some confusion but came after draft decisions had been made.
Now, Pavia’s situation is multifaceted. His NFL chance hinges on a brief minicamp window. The UFL offers a better stylistic fit, and the CFL has a team ready to sign him. With the resurfaced clip drawing attention, every move Pavia makes from here will be closely watched.
