Novak Djokovic continued his pursuit of tennis history with a hard-fought victory over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the second round of the Paris Masters. The Serbian star, chasing a record-extending seventh title in Paris, overcame a spirited challenge from the French wildcard to win 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) on Wednesday.
Djokovic's Determination Shines
Djokovic, who is seeking to break his own record for most Masters 1000 titles, showed resilience against the 20-year-old Mpetshi Perricard. The world number one faced a stern test in the second set, where the young Frenchman pushed him to a tiebreak. However, Djokovic's experience and composure under pressure saw him through.
A Tough Opponent
Mpetshi Perricard, ranked 205th, played with remarkable freedom and power, troubling Djokovic with his big serve and aggressive baseline play. The Frenchman saved three break points in the first set but could not prevent Djokovic from breaking serve in the eighth game. In the second set, he continued to challenge, forcing errors from Djokovic and holding his own serve until the tiebreak.
Record in Sight
Djokovic is now just two wins away from equaling Roger Federer's record of six ATP Finals titles, which he will target at the season-ending event in Turin. But first, he aims to add another Paris Masters crown to his collection. He already holds the record for most Masters 1000 titles with 38, and a win in Paris would extend that lead.
Next up for Djokovic is a quarterfinal clash against either Taylor Fritz or Andy Murray. The Serbian has a strong record against both players, but he will need to be at his best to continue his quest for more records.
