As the FIFA World Cup kicked off this month, Formula E drivers were asked to name their colleagues for a hypothetical football team. The activity turned out to be a fun one, as they explained why Edoardo Mortara could be an excellent choice for both defence and goalkeeper, while Pascal Wehrlein would make a brilliant striker. Check out which drivers would definitely earn a spot if they formed a football team.
Goalkeeper and Defender Choices
For goalkeeper, Norman Nato named Jake Dennis, while Dennis chose Jean-Eric Vergne (JEV). Pascal Wehrlein felt they needed a tall guy in goal and named Lucas Di Grassi. Oliver Rowland picked Mortara, calling him "quite tall", and Pepe Martí agreed with his choice.
In defence, Mahindra Racing's Edoardo Mortara emerged as the first choice among the drivers. When Mortara himself was asked to name a player for defence, he replied, "I would put myself, actually." Mitch Evans picked Jean-Eric Vergne, Lucas Di Grassi and Nyck de Vries, adding, "Yeah, no one's getting past him." Norman Nato said, "Not DAC (Antonio Felix da Costa), he's not strong enough. Mitch, I think, would be a good one." He also named Nico Muller, describing him as a tall and strong guy. JEV thought Rowland and Mortara were well suited to defend because of their strength. Nico Muller also picked Mortara, adding, "He's good with the ball, he's pretty well built." Zane Maloney opted for Rowland, saying, "He's British, so he would be decent at football." Backing himself, Pepe Marti added, "I'd back myself as a defender."
Midfield and Striker Picks
The drivers were then asked to name players for midfield. Antonio Felix da Costa said, "I will probably go with Lucas Di Grassi for organising everything, who goes where." Pepe Martí named Oliver Rowland, and the Nissan driver himself agreed to play in midfield. Martí and Nato also named Dan Ticktum for the midfield role. Nico Muller chose Antonio.
Pascal Wehrlein emerged as the clear favourite for the striker's role. Jake Dennis and Rowland both named Wehrlein, and the German himself also agreed to play as the striker. Mitch Evans also put forward his own name for the position. Meanwhile, Mortara believed there needed to be a Brazilian up front and named Felipe Drugovich.
Team Manager Selection
The most senior Formula E driver was the preferred choice for the role of team manager. Backing his teammate, Lola Yamaha ABT's Zane Maloney said, "I would have Lucas. I mean, he would get quite aggressive." Antonio named JEV as manager. Jake Dennis picked Nick Cassidy for the role, adding, "He'd just tell everyone off and tell us how bad we all are."
Reacting to the video, one fan wrote: "Formula E x Football is the content I need in my life. Now the drivers should play a match to see if their choices were correct." Another commented: "Love how many said Pascal up front," after Wehrlein had named himself for the midfield.
