French Open 2026: Mensik Reaches First Grand Slam Semifinal

In a thrilling quarterfinal match at the French Open on Tuesday night, Jakub Mensik secured his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal berth by defeating teenage sensation Joao Fonseca. The 20-year-old Mensik triumphed over the 19-year-old Fonseca with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3) in a match that lasted two hours and 33 minutes.

Mensik Makes History

The contest between two of tennis's most promising young talents saw Mensik absorb and return Fonseca's powerful shots effectively. With this victory, Mensik became the first male player born after 2004 to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. Both players were competing in their first Grand Slam quarterfinals, but it was Mensik who rose to the occasion, becoming the youngest Czech player to achieve this milestone.

Reflecting on the match, Mensik said in his on-court interview, as per the ATP's official website, "We started a little bit nervous, then at the end of the match, there were some incredible shots. I am super happy that I came back. In the third set, I was a couple of breaks down, so I am happy I managed to stay focused and keep fighting until the end."

The quarterfinal was the youngest at the French Open since 2006, when 20-year-old Rafael Nadal defeated 19-year-old Novak Djokovic. Mensik will now face second seed Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. Zverev, who was the runner-up at the 2024 French Open, advanced by defeating another rising star, Rafael Jodar, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-3 on Tuesday.

Zverev's Comeback Victory

Zverev, who had dropped only one set in his previous five matches, rallied from a 2-5 deficit in the opening set to dominate the match, which concluded in two hours and 17 minutes. He commented on the challenging conditions, stating, "It was difficult. He had perfect rhythm in the first set and I did not. My balls were very short, and I was very defensive. The conditions [under the roof] were completely different. The string tension was different, the way the ball reacted off the ground was different. The ball was not bouncing as high, so heavy topspin was not really beneficial, and I had to flatten my shots out a little bit more."

Zverev acknowledged his opponent's strong play early on, saying, "He was playing amazing and outplayed me in the beginning of the first set, but I managed to come back, and he played a little bit of a nervous game when he served for it. Then I took my chances well, and after that it was a good match for me."

The semifinal matchup between Mensik and Zverev promises to be an exciting clash of generations, with Mensik aiming to continue his breakthrough run and Zverev seeking another shot at the title.
