Germany recall 40-year-old Manuel Neuer for 2026 World Cup

In a surprising move, Germany have recalled 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his fifth tournament appearance. Neuer, who retired from international duty in 2024, is the sole remaining member of Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning squad.

Nagelsmann's squad selections

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann opted to include Neuer ahead of Oliver Baumann, and retained Joshua Kimmich as captain despite Neuer's return. The squad also features new talents, including Bayern Munich's 18-year-old defender Lennart Karl, who earned his first major tournament call-up, and Jamal Musiala, who returns after injury.

Premier League influence

Nagelsmann's squad boasts a Premier League-heavy attack, with Kai Havertz (Arsenal), Florian Wirtz (Liverpool), and Nick Woltemade (Newcastle) all included. The 2026 World Cup, featuring 48 teams, will take place from June 11 to July 19. Germany, who exited at the group stage in 2018 and 2022, will aim to improve on their recent performances.
